It's been a while since I went through the mages guild quest line and even though one of my chars has eidetic memory, I do not, but I think all books read before finishing the mages guild quest will be added to the list once you finish the mages guild quest.

Yes, it is — in fact, on PC you can activate it (make it show in your journal) without doing the Mages Guild line. So the questline just makes it show up in the UI, while the actual entries are being recorded all along.

Pretty sure enabling it prematurely is addon only, like from Lorebooks. But that being true, it does mean that eidetic memory is always there, its just whether or not you see it in the UI, meaning it is always keeping track of what you find.

Yes, Guyle above has it: there is a toggle in the Lorebooks add-on. As an add-on, it’s only available to PC/Mac users, but the existence of the option shows that the Eidetic Memory is working even when you can’t see it in the native UI.

Yeah, they keep track of which books you've found, because I think maybe there are achievements for finding all of the books in a certain category, or at least the zone-completion information on the left side of the zone map shows which books you've found and which ones you're still missing. It's been a while since I've completed the Mages Guild questline on a character, but I'm pretty sure the wording specifically says that the ability covers every lore book you've ever read prior to that point.

The achievements/points and tracker are only for the Mages Guild books that glow blue in the wild and show up in your journal from the beginning. There are no achievements or points for things that belong in the rest of the Eidetic Memory.
