The relationship between the Armour and Magicka Stat

SteveyP777
Good afternoon,

First time posting here - so forgive me if I've missed a similar topic elsewhere but I did try to look and couldn't find anything...

I'm an analyst of sorts and love crunching numbers and am well aware I may not find the answers to very detailed questions. But I am wanting to truly 'understand' stats and how they work in this wonderful game!

I am wanting to strip down to the bare bones so I - literally - stripped my Templar down removing all his gear (and ran embarrassed out of Vivec City because I somehow didn't clock he'd actually be almost naked) and did a test. I added one piece of armour...

I saw some things I expected: War Maiden's Jerkin adds 868 'armour'.

My spell and physical resistance increased on a 1 to 1 rate i.e. by 868 - fair dos.

But my maximum Magicka increased by an arbitrary 43%, and my Magicka recovery by an even more arbitrary 2%.

I have not yet found an explanation of the statistical relationship between the 'armour' stat and Magicka. Also, why did it not increase anything else i.e. why just Magicka? I saw no increase on my stamina or health. Is that because it is classed as 'light' armour which favours Magicka?

Lastly - is a 'guide' available anywhere that gives the specific number crunching data of how the stats work? Most guides I see are a little simplistic for my tastes i.e. 'Light armour is good for Magicka' - but I'm too much of a geek to be satisfied until I've done the excel spreadsheet with all the numbers!!! Though I appreciate that might be wishful thinking.

Thanks all!

I forgot to mention - the War Maiden's Jerkin does have a Magicka Enchantment on it, but the enchantment is not the 43%, it's slightly less - just thought that's worth mentioning!

The glyph is where the magicka is coming from, the discrepancy between the value you see and the glyph are your passive multipliers. There’s no such thing as a relationship between armor value and magicka.

Check your passives... If you're going to do this test properly you need to reset all skills to 0, otherwise there may be a skill or passive influencing the stats. Also pay attention to any food/drink, poison/glyph or traits involved.

Oh, and mundus stone etc... On your character screen you can see a list of active buffs on the character, those willl also need to be taken into account.

The character builder website is a pretty good resource for this sort of thing.

While it's primary intent is to allow you to test different configurations of gear/skills etc to see what stats you end up with without having to do it in game, it is also fairly transparent in how it gets to these values.

In the right hand column that shows the computed stats, if you click on any of the little "..." next to the stat it will bring up the formula for how that stat is calculated from all the bonuses present. The descriptions of these normally give a pretty good indication where each value is coming from, although occasionally there are some things that aren't immediately obvious but you can figure out what's going on with a bit of trial and error.

The values aren't always exactly 100% accurate with what's in game, but I've found it to always be very close, so possibly just the affect of rounding errors and the order of operations.

There are other sources out there that go into the detail of calculations, but I've generally found builder to be the most complete and also generally the most up to date as it is updated with each update of the game as gear/skills etc change.

This is the best explanation IMO:

Some of the formulas have been adjusted since then (a few things have been changed from multiplicative to additive), but it’s mostly still correct.
