Set Collections - How does quality work?

Title says it all, I'm curious to know how the quality system works, as I have greens, blues, purples and yellows in my set collection.

I also thought it costs mats to craft as well as transmutes? I was able to craft a gold Perfected Lokkestiiz's Ring with only transmutes, it didn't ask for any Chromium Plating. Was this supposed to happen?

If item only drop in gold quality you don't need any plating, this is an buff to perfected gear :)

Items are reconstructed in their lowest quality you get, overland is green, dungeon and trial gear outside perfected is blue, monster sets are purple.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Oh I see! Makes sense, thanks for explaining this =)

Perfected gear reconstructs in purple. Perfected jewerly from vKA and vSS is reconstructed in gold. vCR jewerly is purple (because it drops in purple in +2, gold is +3)

Wait a second... What if you reconstruct jewelry and then deconstruct it, do you get "materials" back?

No you only get the crystals. But let's say you got the materials instead of crystals, it wouldn't be huge. Getting a chromium grain for 25 crystals isn't better than getting a nirncrux for 50 crystals.

If I collect a green level item, then later find the same item in purple quality; why doesn't the purple item replace the green item in my set collection?

Because, as others said, you always reconstruct an item at the lowest quality it can drop in the game. You have to spend upgrade mats to reconstruct at higher qualities.

Because, as others said, you always reconstruct an item at the lowest quality it can drop in the game. You have to spend upgrade mats to reconstruct at higher qualities.

That is why it is still worthwhile to keep higher quality jewelry from a set you may use.

That should only be true when you haven’t put any upgrade mats in.

In addition to getting the flat 25 crystals, you also have a chance at getting one of the highest quality upgrade mats that you put in, just like deconning normally. So if you upgrade a jewelry piece using chromium plating (let’s say for making a gold CR jewelry piece), you have a chance at getting a gold grain on decon. If you make a purple Mother’s Sorrow staff, you have a chance at getting a mastic. Etc.

You will never get the trait or style mat, since you can’t add those to a reconstructed piece (they’re built in for the transmute cost), and you won’t get a chance at an upgrade mat if you’ve only reconstructed it at the lowest drop level (so that reconstructed gold vSS jewelry won’t give a grain on decon).
