The way I did this was a bit of a roundabout way and it cost me some extra money, but this is how it went:

First I bought an extra copy of the game at the ESO website. Then I had to contact customer support and ask them to provide a download link for the game client because unlike with a normal game, the client is nowhere be found on the website, most likely to prevent Steam users from getting the proper client.

Eventually I was sent the link which I used to install a clean, Steam-free game on my laptop. Since I still had ESO+ running and because this had also been bought on steam, the account section at the ESO website still listed the Steam subscription and there was no download link for the normal game. I believe this only turned up when the Steam subscription eventually ran out and the game was completely removed from my Steam library.

For some reason the account page still lists a Steam standard edition for me although it has been removed from my library by Steam.

Anyway, I wish you good luck in this endeavour!

i think you anyway have your eso connected to steam
and can launch both ways now

if you will buy eso in steam again, even if you removed it from library completely, when you launch it by steam launcher it will be your old account still, its how steam working, as far as i know and tested

The game download link is on your account management page.

Make sure you are logged into your current ESO account and just buy the base game on the website. The account you want to unlink. That worked for me.

Edit: [I don't know that this will work for accounts purchased through steam. My account was linked after I already had the game.]

There is a "linked accounts" tab when you log into your account on the website. you can unlink from steam there.

    So what does unlinking do?

Does it mean you can use a standard launcher instead of going through steam?

So, worth knowing, this has changed a couple times over the years, and there's no one correct answer.

Originally, you could simply go to accounts, get a non-Steam client download, and you were good to go. (Apparently, even just directly launching the steam.exe may have worked? I'm not sure because I don't have a Steam linked copy of the game.)

At some point Steam locked out the login system on their end. I can confirm this from other MMOs, but again, not ESO. At that point, you could still download the ZOS launcher, and your account could migrate back and forth.

Sometime around 2017, the policy changed, and new Steam linked accounts were permanently linked to Steam, at that point, the required approach was to buy a separate base game copy of the game, attach it to your account, and then get Customer Support to de-link you.

From what I understand, Customer Support stopped doing that early last year sometime

So, I'm not sure. It depends on when your account was created, and there are a variety of factors. I would suggest simply prodding customer support for more information.

Open your account online. From there, purchase a new standard version of ESO. If the game is already installed and linked to Steam, leave it that way. If it's not, install it through Steam. Now delete the Steam created shortcuts on your desktop. Create your own shortcut directly to the launcher. Close the Steam app. Make sure it is completely closed by checking the Show Hidden Icons section of the taskbar. If it is there, right-click and close it. Now run the game from your newly created shortcut. Login as usual. From there on, just make sure the Steam app is completely closed before running the launcher.

You don't unlink your account this way, but you can login directly and bypass all the Steam crap. It costs you a little money for the new version, but it's worth it.

now lets say im gonna unlink it again do i have to buy it from website amd ask support to unlink it? (again originally i bought this game from website)

Not sure, but you should be able to just unlink it.

As I said, there was absolutely no download link anywhere because I originally bought the game on Steam. I had to request a download link. NOW, more than a year later, there is a download link. But as long as ESO+ was active on Steam, ZOS made it impossible to get the installer.

No, that is absolutely not how this works. You need to buy the game again and also you mustn't have ESO+ active through Steam.
