C.O.D. return time

From official ESO support page:

"For COD mails, if the player you have sent an item to does not open the mail and take the item, the item will be returned to you after it expires in 30 days. When a COD mail is sent, the recipient has three days to accept the mail. After this time, the mail and item(s) is automatically returned."

So which one is it ? Is it 3 days after I sent the mail and it hasn't been accepted or 30 ? It says both, one right after the other. Very confusing.

As it stands I sent several c.o.d.s last weekend (so almost a week ago now) to a friend who no longer plays because I was running out of inventory space and wanted to store some items in my mailbox. The mails still haven't been returned to me.

    It’s both.

Unopened mail with attachments, wether COD or not, expire after 30 days. This applies only to messages that were never clicked on and are still flagged as new . If it’s a system generated mail the message and attachments simply disappear. Mail sent by a player will be returned.

Once a message is no longer highlighted as new, either because it was clicked on or simply because it was on top when the mail UI was opened, the 30-day timer is removed. That’s when the 3-day timer starts for COD mail. Once checked, the player has 3 days to decide to accept the items and pay the fee, or it will be returned. Regular mail with attachments will stay in your mail forever once checked (I currently have end of campaign reward mails that are over 2 years old, just because).

TL;DR - a player has 30 days to check their mail before a COD gets returned. Once checked, that player has 3 days to accept the item and pay before it gets returned.

This is why you never cod but trade in person. Also there's alot of trolls out there who have no intention to buy and your stuff is stuck.

Maybe they should implement an option where the sender can cancel the cod mail anytime before? Or give the sender the ability to preset a 'use-by' limit when sending the cod mail up the the current maxima?

It can be quite disappointing if you send something cod then wait 28 days for the pay-off during which time the item(s) price may have gone up substantially. Even if the price drops the recipient essentially still retains full choice/control during the 30 day period.

Yes, despite other disadvantages this works better.

and that is why they lowered it to 3 days. it used to be a straight 30 days and that was what was happening. they had no intention of buying but wanted to tie up your stuff to reduce competition. and remember YOU pay the cod fee and it isnt refunded if the mail is returned.

    Seriously bad advice.

Trade is intended to pass between friends, COD is secure. Sure you risk a delay but at least there's no risk.

Trade has scammed many people and is a risk.
