Sounds like you may be one of those people who leave items in treasure chests then.
If so, is there anything I can say to convince you to stop? It's really quite selfish.
I am and no there's not. How exactly is it selfish? If I would've looted the whole thing you still wouldn't have gotten anything.
Then there would be no treasure chest when I got there, and that would be fine.
Instead, there is one, and it's got a 0% chance of anything decent in it.
Blame ZoS for putting trash items in there then? What do I want with a green quality Rubidite Maul of Flame?
I've pulled a Briarheart 2h from a previously opened chest before. One man's trash is another man's treasure and all that..
Why would I blame ZoS for your poor behaviour? At least we both agree that you're leaving trash.
Of course. If it was an item worth taking then why would I leave it?
There's a word for someone who leaves trash for others to pick up. Litterbug.
There are other words too, but they violate the community guidelines.

You waste people's time. You waste their inventory space. You dash their hopes.

It boils down to, people saw a chest and got their hopes up only to have those hopes fall when the chest is empty. And now they feel bad. In this day, feelings (no matter how fleeting) are given far too much importance over facts.

Nah, you just don't want to have to eventually have to get rid of all that junk. The chest farmers have rotations, and leaving stuff in chests let them get to the next chest faster, and makes it so others will be drawn to the trash chest and not rush to the other, regular chests on the farming route.
Trolling or Baiting: The act of trolling is defined as something that is created for the intent to provoke conflict, shock others, or to elicit a strong negative or emotional reaction. It’s okay and very normal to disagree with others, and even to debate, but provoking conflict, baiting, inciting, mocking, etc. is never acceptable in the official The Elder Scrolls Online community. If you do not have something constructive or meaningful to add to a discussion, we strongly recommend you refrain from posting in that thread, and find another discussion to participate in instead. It is also not constructive or helpful to publicly call out others and accuse them of trolling, or call them a troll—please refrain from doing so. If you genuinely believe someone is trolling, please report the post or thread to the ESO Team, and leave it at that.
