Without potentially faction changing to get these skyshards that are in enemy bases.. how do I get them? Or is this my only way to get them?

The base gates open if the enemy faction loses home forts, that's also how you capture scrolls from their temples.

you will need to wait until that faction's gate is open. you can get the shards on any of the campaigns and some gates will open more than others. i had to check the maps several times a day and watch for the gate open message across the top of the screen. it will tell you which gate and on what campaign. when you see that, drop what you are doing and go go go to that gate. pray you live. :)

Best time is during Midyear Mayhem, and there should be one coming up around January.

Once the alliance loses control of the two keeps nearest the gate, it'll open. You can check when those alliances have low population and then hop in there and see if they're open.

I was in a lfg group when I got some of mine, but others I just ran to when my alliance went for a scroll and I snuck in after them to get the shard. As long as you can make it behind the gate, they're not too tough to get to otherwise.

Its very difficult to pull off but the thing is your faction doesn't necessarily need to be the one to open the gates. If you keep on eye on the PVP activity you might get lucky one day and have someone going for a scroll push. Could use invisibility to get inside undetected and grab the sky shard.

An alternative method for PVE'rs who struggle with PVP is one that costs crowns. ESO allows you to buy skyshards for the DC, AD and EP Cyrodill zones IF you got the correct respective on another character. So say you wanted to get the DC skyshards on an AD character. You can get the DC cyrodiil skyshard achievement on a DC character, which unlocks the option to buy said skyshards on every other character, which you can then do for your AD character. Likewise with EP.

It costs a bit of crowns, and you still have to get the skyshard achievements in the first place, but it is an option if you dont want to deal with gates.

Just PVP for a while in any campaign & at some stage your faction will get the upper hand & the gates will be opened. Or else, make a campaign your home campaign & enable the AvA notifications in settings, when you see that someone from your faction has an enemy scroll... that means an enemy gate is open.. get in there asap & grab those shards! :D

As others have said, timing it is important. Checking all campaigns and see when the enemy faction gates are open is one way. You can also check population balance, if one faction is very low there a good chance they're gated.

Also, if you're not a nightblade, make sure to have stealth potions available as that will make things easier. For a NB, having a stealth build makes things a lot easier. I grabbed the DC skyshards on my EP pacifist NB while AD where trying to take the DC scrolls in one campaign. Without stealth, that's pretty hard to do without dying.

Also, the mobs at the gate are tightly leashed to the gate so just ride a horse and run through it without stopping to fight. If they knock you off your ride, just keep running off on foot.

Check out campaigns in slow hours like early in morning or late at night.
At this times one faction has usually captured most of the map.
This let you port close to skyshards and get them.

    Yes. That's how I did it. I parked my character in Cyrodiil and checked back fairly late at night/early in the morning. When I saw that my alliance had most of the map up to where the gates are, I ported as close as I could and then rode through the gate with all speed abilities that I had! And kept running like mad. ^^;;

    I don't do PvP, so getting those last few skyshards was a hard ride for me. Not good for my bloodpressure... ^^;;

It will take you a few days, but keep popping into Cyrodiil to check on your alliance's progress.

Also, check websites for exact locations before you start. Almost all skyshards are reachable if you get through the various gates. Only the temple ones are most difficult, because you have to wait for the gates to be open. Once you're through, you can get to the skyshards without problems.

You can make a PVP character for each faction and go get them, or you can do what I did - make a stealthy Khajit bow ganker and go collect all the shards in Cyrodil. Then I can just buy them for crowns on my other character. It took a little work, but tbh, it was so much fun camping Yellow home bases waiting for the gates to be open and then rushing past several yellow zergs to get the last 2 shards LOL.

Try it at odd hours, early morning is perfect, also smart to check out multiple campaigns. Because of the low population at this time one color maps are pretty common, the overflow campaigns during midyear mayhem pretty always end up single color later in the event, as many are farming the town quests then that happens.

If you don't play PvP then it's just a matter of waiting/checking for the gate to be open. It's impossible to say exactly how long that will take of course, it only happens when that faction loses control of the nearest keeps so it's not at a set time, but if you keep checking you should see it sooner or later. (It doesn't need to be your faction taking it either, once the gate is open anyone can get through.)

Even when it is open it's still defended (a large group of attackers might be able to kill all the NPCs, but I'm not sure) but you can simply ride past them. I was able to do it even on characters without maxed riding skill (about 10 points each in speed and stamina if I remember correctly) and without using rapids. It's actually easier to do it without galloping because having enough stamina to stay mounted is more important than going slightly faster.

Once you're a short way inside the gate the NPC defenders will break off and then you just need to worry about other players, like usual. Although unless a big group has just stormed in and is in the process of taking the elder scrolls from the temples that area is likely to be fairly empty because there's nothing there except the elder scrolls and the skyshards, so there's no reason for players to spend much time in there but you might run into people from enemy factions exploring, going for the skyshard or ganking skyshard hunters.

(One of the few times I've been teabagged in this game I was sitting afk on a bench beside the skyshard after collecting it. It must have been the easiest kill ever and they acted like it was some massive achievement...but I guess for people like that taking out a stationary, unresisting target is the best they can manage.)

If you do play PvP then mostly it's the same - just keep looking out for the gate to be open, but you might also be able to join in when a group goes for the elder scrolls or even persuade them to open the gate for you if it's a good time to try that.

Well if you're AD then you should have been in cyro over the last couple days... we've had all the gates open in GH at one point or another.

Best time is during Midyear Mayhem
This is bloody foolish advice. Midyear mayhem is literally the worse time in the year to try to rush through an enemies gate, it's the most active time in AvA!!!

OP I got all skyshards in the game and what I did was join a campaign, keep checking the map as I PvE (as i rarely do AvA) soon as I saw gates were open I went into cyrodiil and B-lined for the gate.
About 2 or 3 times I got there and got rushed by other players, one time specifically they would not let me through at all and camped the gate.
I tried again, put rapids on steamed through the gate solo, popped an invis potion then went for the shard.
Easier in the night when the keeps are getting ghost capped.

Usually in the early morning, someone night-capped the entire campaign and at least a few of the gates are open.

I just got the last skyshard behind the gates on a character I forgot was missing it.

If you are really intent on this, set a campaign to your home campaign and set Cyrodiil notifications to display outside of Cyro.

Make a list of the gates you need and when you get a message that says "The gate of X is open" hop into Cyrodiil and go get your skyshard.

But really, checking in the early morning is usually the best strategy.

The first days yes, but at the end of event the overflow campaigns tends to exist fro two reasons 1) farm town quests in PvE mode 2) farming emperor fast, this changes the map color, during this process some other take the reminding keeps.
However small groups stay away from single colored maps in the wrong color.

Also worth noting, you don't have to do this in your home campaign. You can hop into any campaign as a guest if you feel there's a chance the needed gates will be open.

Just did this on an alt last weekend, hopped into a campaign with low population for the faction where i still needed the shards and sure enough after finishing two dungeons i also still needed the gate opened and i got in.

Never saw a single enemy player (they were all busy with keeps) until the very last minute when i was trying to blood-port back to my home base. Saw him/her running up as i was killed by guards.

The gate thing people have covered. What also helps for that and the rest of the shards is the Ring of the Wild Hunt and at least 5 medium armor bits for max ground speed.

Invisibility potions work while mounted. Use the potion and ride right by the guards. Don't use sprint or rapids while the potion is in affect, or it will break the invisibility.
