I've hit a dead end leveling scrying, I'm at level 3 in the skill line and the game no longer lets me scry for anything. help?
Playing your character the way your character should play is all that matters. Play as well as you can but never betray the character. Doing so would make playing an mmoRPG pointless.

Do you have several things scryed but not excavated? Because there is a limit on that, and past that you will be unable to scry more things.

Make sure you still have access to Greymoor, and that you are trying to scry items in the "Available" category rather than just stuff that is listed but not available. Basic points I know, but I'm not aware of any more general issues with scrying. Have you tried different zones? Are you using any add-ons that might interfere with either the activity or the UI?

I got stuck for ages because I didn't realise I'd already scryed but excavated yet (as mentioned above).

In Western Skyrim the white outline of the antiquity site was over the snow-covered portion and was difficult to see. I only noticed due to the antiquity symbol on my compass.

Hope you manage to sort it.

You know about the tool in your collections, right? It shows the direction of the site once you're in the correct area.

Yeah I know about that, I'm talking about finding the location to use the eye in on the map after initially finishing the scry. This (at least on console) is a translucent-white area with a light border. When this area happens to be in a white (snowy) part of the map, I have personally struggled to spot it (so I will align myself with the antiquity sign on the compass so I'm aiming directly at it when referring to the map).

Due to this, I have previously not realised that I had already scryed but not excavated, leading to a similar situation to that of OP's.

Click on the Scryable section when you're in the Antiquities pane of the quest log - if you have un-excavated items, it will show up there, @dazee.

Understood, thanks for clarifying. I haven't had that problem on PC - yet but not sure how many sites I've had on a snowy part of the map. What I have found is that when entering an antiquity area the blue border on the compass window doesn't always light up but that's usually when there is more than one antiquity area on the map and is easily resolved by clicking on the area in the map I'm checking out.

Yeah I found this out the hard way too....
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

5 to be exact, you can't have more than 5 active excavations. At that point, you won't be able to scry any more until you finished some of those excavations.

And, considering that no part of the default UI gives you an overview of all your leads across all zones, it is very easy to hit the limit of 5 unexcavated scryings. I would strongly suggest they add a simple. unfolded list of all active leads to the base game. The add-on "Display Leads" does it well, but consoles need that overview as well.

Lucky stupid me, I had always assumed I could only scry for one antiquity at a time. So I haven't run into the problem that I couldn't scry anymore. Anyway, an overview of all scryable items on one screen without having to click through all regions should be part of the standard game and absolutely shouldn't require an addon - especially because consoles have no way at all to get any kind of overview.

I always excavate right after I scry. It never occurred to me not to, nor can I think of a reason why I wouldn't.

If you have multiple leads in the same zone you can save some time scrying them first, then excavating them using an efficient route.

Eh, the reason I scry/excavate one at a time is that I really don't have any need to hurry. Not to mention that I already ran into the problem with too many scry options available.... I'm old. I have to do things in sequence....

    That makes sense.
