Year-Long Saga Question

I keep hearing and seeing 'year long' this and 'year long' that... If I miss some of the story, will I still be able to play it after the year is up? Is it a time limited story or is it just that it will take a full year just to flesh it out and afterwards we can buy the full expansion instead of piece by piece?

It is not time-limited. You will still have to buy each piece. (Or subscribe, after the Chapter becomes a DLC.)

All it means is that all the content released in a year is all connected to a storyline. If you play Harrowstorm, Greymoor, Stonethorn, and Markarth in order, all four DLCs tell the story of the "Dark Heart of Skyrim" in 2020.

Or last year, it was Wrathstone, Elsweyr, Scalebreaker, and Dragonhold telling the story of the Year of the Dragon in 2019.

That's in contrast to 2018, where we had Summerset which was the climax of the Daedric Wars arc and the unrelated, standalone Murkmire DLC.

You can buy it piece by piece. Despite being part of a big quest line, that's divided in a chapter and dlc, quest lines from a content don't need the previous content completion for you to start it.

    Edit: typo

It's basically an attempt to make the dungeon DLC appeal to more people. Before they started these themed years dungeon DLC was all stand-alone with minimal story, so unless you specifically wanted access to more dungeons you could skip them and only buy/play the chapter and the story DLC. This tries to give other PvE players an incentive to do the dungeons (and therefore either buy them or subscribe) as well.

If you want to play a full storyline that's all you need to do - play all 4 releases from that year in order. They'll always be available and it's up to you whether you want to buy them or subscribe to get access.
