Is there a decent list of what exactly each skills are - ie which ones are considered melee, which DOT, which AOE, which ranged - as there does not seem to be that much clarity, especially over what is melee.

Have googled & searched here and reddit but to no avail. All genuine help gratefully received.

Surely it can't be too hard to add identifiers such as DoT, Direct Damage, yada yada. This would make it less confusing when trying to decide how to allocate CP. Some skills are too subjective.

i.e. I think the Volley and its morphs (bow AOE DoT) should be considered direct damage, not DoT. Yes, it continues to deal dmg over time, but by individual arrows dealing direct dmg over a period of time. Its not like a poison arrow that hits once and continues to dmg you with poison. Although both of these are considered DoT, they are still very different.

OP, unless im mistaken, orange dmg numbers that appear below the target are DoT. Yellow dmg numbers that appear above the enemy are direct dmg. Hope that helps, for the DoT question at least. Oh, and if its a slightly larger, slightly darker yellow, thats a critical hit.

All I would like is a list. Or at least some indication of what a melee skill is, for example. Could put it on the tool tip!

Is it just stam weapons?
But not bow, as is ranged - but then what about steel tornado or flying blades, as they can be ranged?
And what about Biting Jabs?

If an item set says 5th bonus increase melee damage (or whatever) HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHICH SKILL TO USE?

yes, tooltips usually lack proper information. And sites usually are wrong, last time when Sweeps from magplar was Direct Damage it could still proc Skoria (set that procs from dots) with any of the 4 hits. Best is to test it yourself, reset CP distribution, cast the skill and see the numbers, then put points into one perk and see if it's boosted or not.

I have ask for expand tooltips before numerous times to no avail. PC with the help of add-ons can get the info but console players are forced to out of game for such information which I think is wrong and should not be. The same goes for expanded info on the character screen such as penetration.

It's a good question as several are curve balls in the past, Curse as an example.

I don't get the lack of transparency in this game.

If you use combat metrics - there's and asterisk beside st dot (like soul trap*) but it isn't perfect and doesn't cover aoe dots and have few mishaps. It's something though, I guess.

Us on console would like a built in, official way to better track this information though.

Yep - am a console player for my sins 😉 so combat metrics options not available.

I honestly can’t see why this is apparently such a difficult thing to answer!

This site does have a list of every single skill tree in the game, broken down, and easily digestible.

There are no sets that specify ‘melee damage’ but there are sets that specify ‘weapon/spell damage’. If the heavy attack from a weapon restores stamina, its damage is classed as Weapon Damage. If the heavy attack restores magicka, its damage is classed as Spell Damage.
