Because they're the New York Yankees of companies and it's hip to hate. They've made plenty of missteps over their history but they've also changed the world with their achievements. We will see how this all plays out. I'm optimistic.

PS fans are salty but they don't seem to be that MS isn't competing with Sony anymore in this arena. It's competing with Amazon and Google.

I honestly don't care about it being Microsoft. What worries me is Xbox. TES games as well as Fallout games are good precisely because they are PC games. Consoles have always served as a net-nanny that hinders games both in content and in technical development but for TES and Fallout user generated content is key and that content doesn't need to be baby locked the way it is now for those stuck on console.

ESO will be fine. It's an MMO so already baby-gated to a large degree and as seen by the fact that some TES lore is 'too adult' for the game despite it carrying an MA rating.

I don't think many "hate" MS but gamers in general feel uneasy about a landscape increasingly controlled by megacorps and fear the homogenization and stifling of creativity this could lead to.

Just be glad it wasn't EA. THEN I'd be agreeing with you people, but Microsoft has a decent track record with video games in my eyes and I have no issue with this.

And I agree more with Archmikem about EA. It was inevitable that Bethesda would be bought by someone. MS is probably a better choice than both EA and Sony while I think we can all agree it is supremely better than being bought by some of the investment companies like who used to own Toys R Us.

they used to be as bad as EA. they seem to be not so bad with Phil Spencer at the helm, so I guess we shall see, but people don't hate them just because of Halo.

I don't particularly hate Microsoft.

I am very leery of media consolidation, of larger companies gobbling up smaller competitors. I don't think it's good for consumers or for creators. It's only good for shareholders.

EDIT: And the more it occurs, the harder it gets for new, smaller competitors to break in. Again, this is bad for creators and for consumers.

That's a good question.

Maybe its the impression from how they score for everything they do: They're not here because they've done anything remarkable or better than anyone else, they're just rich, chumpy and can't get knocked out.

They've also proven they're more self serving than user serving on the windows side.

From many hunches, i can't imagine bethesda and zenimax not getting assimilated into the machine borg culture they have, so... i don't think anyone knows what the future for eso will be. Yeah i feel for any employees who in addition will have to deal with getting assimilated. Could be good, could be bad, but certainly change.

EDIT: Also my honest opinion... the pc game pass is the only positive thing microsoft are doing that i notice. Every other contact with the brand triggers some sort of jibe or worse. If bethesda aren't going to be used as a billion dollar meat shield to improve their image (like epic with the bribes) they need to be actively pulling bethesda out of the microsoft mud. The first thing i thought when reading the news was "its all over for elder scrolls".

It is more likely that the games will eventually be part of the MS gaming service which would have fewer restrictions as to the platform it can be played on. However, ESO will be safe on all platforms.

Not all of us can afford the constant upgrades PC gaming requires. (For the record, I played Oblivion & Fallout 3 on PC, but then I had children and got a mortgage.) Hence the exclusive move to console, specifically PS4.
After all the hours I've spent on ESO doing so many fun (and some not so fun) things, and making new friends across the world, I would be absolutely devastated to lose future updates and content. Not to mention that at least one of my friends has said "I don't feel like playing now... what's the point?" with regards to ESO potentially not being supported on PS5.

I would also be pretty peeved if TES6 was a timed exclusive on XB, if it was longer than say, three months.

I think probably a lot of people are jumping the gun on that... I hope that the implicit promise of continued support on PS5 is a reality.

I'm almost excited about it. ZOS has thus far shown themselves unable to create a functional game without crippling bugs or performance issues, and has continually demonstrated their desire to not actually spend money to fix issues.

Microsoft is still a huge money hungry multinational corporation of course, but the one thing they do have at their disposal is money, and the know how to make functional software too. Hell they could probably double the current development budget for ESO without anyone even noticing.

Will they do any of that? Will they actually give the developers the tools they need (resources, staff, expertise, etc) to make a better game? Not a clue. Probably not, but even if they didn't things couldn't be worse than they are now, so bring it on. I welcome our new overlords.

I upgrades my 6 year old PC this summer, I upgraded it because I got an an option to do so from work as we work more from home now. Else it would last 2-3 year more. 980ti grapic card is probably the weakest spot now.
But don't have issues in games so.

And MS seems more interested in selling services than consoles.

Bethesda has gone from apologizing for paid horse armor to paid modding and real money gambling. They are currently as bad as EA. I'm not saying they will get better but I don't think they could possibly get worse.

It pains me to say it because I used to love nearly everything they put out but in the end they will push their customers as far as they can before they break just like any other major publisher now.

This. It's not like you have to upgrade your whole PC every 2 years. I usually change my whole rig every 10 years. During those periods I'm just adding/replacing some parts making it pretty easy to do. Last year I've changed my GPU (I do it usually after introducing new flag ships, so the old still powerful ones are getting much cheaper), this year I'll upgrade my CPU. When prices of SSD disc went down I've bought one. It's really easier to keep PC upgraded than people think, its hard only when you want to have BiS parts.

And about MS taking over Zeni, I'm pretty optimistic. MS showed many times they are not as closed minded as Apple or many other companies. They develop their services to be compatible with every big platform on the market and for sure they have great coders, some of the best in the world.

i'm against hige corporations buying their smaller competitors in general. it's awful for business. in some years there will only be a few global corporations that own everything.

This. After more than 20 years of the studios running their own show, Todd Howard handed the keys to a megacorp that has no reason to care about the identity of any of the catalogues they’ve just obtained.

Though...some of the hate might be because most of us have been personally victimized by shoddy Windows 10 patch QA. So in the case of ESO specifically, we’re taking a product known for rapid content release with poor QA, and handing it to another company who has become known for rapid updates with poor QA.
