Is Trowel triggering twice supposed to happen?

Hi everyone, scrying is one of my favorite things to do but I noticed something that’s been a bit of a problem. Trowel (costs 2 intuition, removes 3 layers of dirt) will automatically trigger twice if I have 4 intuition saved up and it’s broken the antiquity I’ve been working on by going too deep and damaging it. Is that supposed to happen? To prevent that from happening I lowered Hand Brush so my maximum saved intuition is limited to 2.

Yes. The Shovel does the same thing. It will remove two layers of dirt with 4 Intuition saved up.

You know I've never thought of it as something that wasn't intended. I usually use it right before the second one fills up so I can better control what dirt level I am at.

Thank you! I was worried if it was a bug. Guess I’ll keep my max intuition at 2 to be safe!

PizzaCat82 has the right idea until you get accustomed to the varying layers of dirt you're digging through.

Thank you for the clarification on the automatic intuition use!

I have scratched my head more than a few times as to why I damaged a chest, or messed up a “perfect square” - even when carefully planned out.

Yes, this will come in really handy when you unlock the "deep shovel" passive that explodes the smoking squares if you connect them and dig to the bottom.

You want to keep an eye on your intuition and not go to 4 if you are not ready to dig twice.

I wouldn't say lower the hand brush; the option of digging deeper is a nice one; just be aware of how "full" that bar is.

Also - if the "smoking squares" are too high, it won't work. Found that out the hard way. Doesn't seem to work if they are in the very pale uppermost layers.

There has been no official word from a Zenimax employee on this, and another person in my guild has just reported this as a problem because it's exploded several artifacts when he has had either his trowel or his shovel automatically dig twice in one click.

It strikes me that this is not a thing that should be happening. Digging with Trowel or Shovel when your intuition is at 4, should dig once, and reduce it to 2, not automatically dig twice and reduce it to 0.

Can there be an OFFICIAL word on the matter please? As in, a post in this thread from an actual "@ZOS_" Zenimax employee who knows how things are supposed to work?

It's definitely intentional and it ends up costing less to use that way. You just have to be smart about clearing layers. Once you know what the layers look like it's super easy.

For example, I never use it when it is single I always clear away other squares until I can remove double layers.

And by costing less I mean it uses 4 inspiration but it only costs 1 turn of time in your meter. So if you get lucky and get inspiration refresh you can dig to uncover the antiquity in 2 units of time for 8 inspiration rather than 4 units of time for 8 inspiration

Okay base trowel removes three levels of dirt for one shot (2 tuition). You can then double shot (4 tuition) it for six layers of dirt at level six. Master excavation has a total of eight layers max and ultimate has 10 layers max.

Usually though trowels are subpar to heavy shovels, and very rarely do they ever play the artifact in a fissure. Dont use a max trowel on purple or below, you'll break it... as each layer not removed counts as an attack on the item.

    Hopes this has helped.

It's a feature and a very useful one. Takes practice and paying attention to your inspiration bar to maximize the spaces you clear without doing too much.
