So the event involves doing dailies or KA weekly to get event tickets and the reward boxes.

There is some mention of digging up antiquities to unlock rewards for everyone, but this seems only marginally related to the rest of the event.

Looking at the progress page, the progress bar says "unlocked at 33%" - er 33% of what exactly? What are the target numbers?

Sorry for being pedantic, but I used to work as a statistician and anyone who has ever crunched numbers for a living will be asking the same questions :D

Also, I think you misunderstand the event when you say that antiquities are only a small part of the it.. the entire event, and the rewards, are based on antiquities

No, it says event tickets and reward crates from turning in daily quests - that isn't antiquities.

None of the other events gave a final target number. so don't expect an answer.
What is interesting is that already dug up antiquities are not counting. For Summerfall and Elsweyr already completed Pathfinder achievements counted.

Based on previous events, they will never say what the targets actually are. For the Summerset event they mentioned that it was "a number they felt we were likely to hit." But they only updated the meter once per day with static images, so it obviously wasn't a real-time tracker.

Could you imagine if they did set a real-time tracker and we didn't make it? That happened once with a Twitch stream goal, which we know because we could see the concurrent viewership, and they still gave us the last prize anyhow even though we hadn't reached the target. The last thing they want from this event is people walking away talking about how not enough people participated. It's about PR for them as much as about a sense of reward and community for us.

I am aware that previous events did not mention target numbers.

I also recall asking about it every time.

Do you not think it is in anyway problematic to have targets such as "33% of something" where something is unknown and can be decided on the fly with no transparency?

Absolutely. But they won't take the risk to PR in order to be transparent.

The options are. Get the final reward when we reach the benchmark OR when the event ends. So we get the rewards regardless. Just a matter of time.

This is an antiquities event. Like all events for some time now, it features event tickets as well.

Last community-wide objective event I recall was based around Summersett and gave us a free palace in Arteum. As I recall, the percentages toward goal were never really translated into numbers. Perhaps some vagueness is intentional but I don't know.

So what is it that we "do" to progress the "community tracker"?

Is it only digging antiquities IN Western Skyrim?

Is it the level/rank of the items so found?

Is it something to do with do the peeps who actually have Greymoor actually using the antiquities system?

These are really good questions - and looking through the article, I don't see them answered.

This phraseology; "As you and your fellow players seek out, excavate, and discover Tamriel’s hidden histories, you’ll slowly unlock up to three tiers of rewards"

seems to imply that it's the use of the antiquities system that progresses the community rewards, but .... well I've never seen any of ESO's announcements that did not require clarification.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

@newtinmpls when I watched the twitch live thing, they said that digging up antiquities all over Tamriel counted. The real link to Skyrim is that you gotta have Greymoor to do antiquities.

Though I'm sure it's too late now, what I would have loved to see is a slight boost during the event to skill line progress for scrying/excavating. Though I only need one char at 10, I woudn't mind working others up to level 7 for that handy 'see chests glow' perk.

It seems like we can just do the basic green and blue antiquities in each zone, and that would count toward unlocking the house, fawn and NPC.

We aren't meant to know the number because there isn't one. It's just a bar that will move up through the event and at some point, they will just unlock it for us. It doesn't matter if any one person participates or not.

They set the goal. They determine our progress and only they know those numbers. With every number being a variable we don't know, the only logical assumption is that none of the numbers actually exist and they just want us to think that our progress matters.

It's about perception and not actual participation. The community as a whole feels good when we "unlock" the rewards (that we are likely guaranteed anyway). If we lose, it's only because ZOS set the goal too high and the blowback for that would be largely negative so there is no incentive to rig the system so that we don't win.

Not for this event, but you can do the green and blue repeatables if you have no other leads to dig up.

But remember, Codex entries are generally 3 per item, except for things like the mount, body markings, and emote. So even if you have 1 of everything, go for a second of third. I'm hoping to mostly complete codex during this event.

You can get any antiquity multiple times! Except the collectibles - mount. emotes, etc

I would think it was problematic if it were something I was paying for. As a bonus freebie giveaway that requires nothing more than for me to have fun doing something I've already paid for and would probably do anyway... and where based on every other event we can feel pretty confident that they are going to give us all of the rewards in the end anyway... no, I don't find it even slightly problematic.

It might be interesting to know what the targets are, but it doesn't in any way affect my life decisions or the choices I will make with respect to this event or any other.

That was two years ago. Last year the community event was in Elsweyr, and the main goody was the dragon's loot.

And yes, the vagueness is always intentional.

I'm pretty sure that we can't see the numbers because ZOS wants to be able to adjust them if needed so that the event will be a success regardless of what players do.
But still, I love these events. Tracker page might be fake, but player cooperation is real and I think it's great that they encourage people to help each other by sharing dailies, making nTial groups and such. Rewards are pretty awesome, too, I really like that house.

Your friend is talking about the "free scry" items for applicable zones (meaning, ones you don't have to search for leads--you get the leads by excavating), and yes, those are unlimited! Typically, each zone with Antiquities has a free green, blue, and purple item that you sell to vendors for gold. They have to be scried in order: you must excavate the green item (found in the Scryable category of your Antiquities menu) to get the blue lead, and excavate the blue item to get the purple lead. The purple item you can only excavate once, but you can dig up as many greens and blues as you want. You can also just dig up the green ones nonstop and ignore the blue leads since they don't stack, if you don't want to keep juggling between the two tiers for whatever reason. Sometimes I get so zoned out from grinding that I can't remember whether I last dug out my green item or my blue item, and it throws me off my stride.

Many people who are grinding up their Antiquities skill lines do the green-blue farm on Artaeum because it's a tiny zone, so it's very easy to get from one dig site to another, and you don't have to deal with enemies. You can rack up a lot of digs very quickly with this method.

Additionally, Innkeepers and wandering wilderness merchants sell leads for Antique Treasure Maps of most zones, that you can only buy if you have the Pathfinder Achievement for discovering all the map locations for that zone. They're not free, but you get a furnishing out of it. (This might have been fixed after I finished scrying maps, but just in case:) only buy one of those at a time. They don't stack, so if you go ahead and multi-buy three at once because you're trying to fill out your codex, you just end up wasting gold because you only receive one lead anyway.
