Spontaneous-perma-snare bug

I get an occasional bug in which my character is seriously slowed.
  • This happens both in crafting towns and in dungeons, and occasionally in the landscape as well.
  • It makes walking speed very slow, but does not hamper sprint speed.
  • It happens on wardens and nightblades, usually wardens.
  • It is not fixed by /reloadui.
  • It is fixed by other relogging (porting to a different zone or logging out altogether).

This is on the PC. I play with a bunch of add-ons, but none directly concerned with movement.

The bug seems to just arise out of nowhere. Today, for example, it happened early in a run through White-Gold Tower, so my movement was almost sprint-only for the rest of the run. But at other times it happens, for example, soon after picking up consumable crafting writ quests in Rawl'kha.

While I usually wear gear and/or equip skills that offer speed buffs, that is not always the case. In today's case, for example, I was on a magden with an unremarkable destro/resto kind of healing build.

Does anybody else have experience with this? Are there known causes or workarounds?

Is there an active effect on you at the time?
Could it be simply desynch or input lag?
    Have you got a video?

Well, in town I usually have Jailbreaker gear on and hence Minor Expedition, but otherwise no. And in dungeons I don't have that (but there may be other effects).

I should check more carefully to see whether any mysterious debuffs seem to have shown up at such times. Thanks for the nudge.

How would such a thing last for 10 minutes plus, through multiple fights?

Sorry, no. But it's always simply a matter of having very slow walking speed.

Just got the bug in Round 7 of Maelstrom Arena. That was NOT a good place for it. You might say that I took umbrage.

    I was on a warden.

Have you keybound the Toggle Walk/Jog option perhaps, and activated it without realising?

Are you using the Heavy Armour skill and accidentally pressing it?

This slowmotion bug ocured frequently a couple of months ago in Cyrodiil. Havent had it for a long time now. Best thing is to report it with footage and hope for the best.

Do you mean Walk/Run? This is about walking being much slower than normal, so I don't see the relevance.

    No.

I died a couple of times before I relogged. So I tested that respawning does NOT fix the problem, whether via soul gem or start-of-instance wayshrine.

I don't video my play. Indeed, I don't know how.

Is there a convenient way to always make video so that one catches bugs when they happen? I'm on a Windows PC.

Hahaha, another Cyrodiil bug that has not been fixed for some time and now enters PvE lands. ZOS really don't read their bug reports...

Edit: it usually happens for the whole server at the same time.

I've probably been having it rarely, for over a year, at times when other PvE folks don't seem to be sharing it.

Almost always on my magdens. Never that I recall on my stamblade thief, who I play a lot. Occasionally on a magblade. I don't recall one way or the other about my stamden, who I only play intermittently.

The default movement speed of a character is actually 'jogging'. So characters will either jog or sprint.

Walking is a hidden movement mode (as stupid as that sounds) which has no keybind by default. And it's actually a toggle on off that switches between slow walking and 'fast' walking (jogging). It's about as fast as crouched stealthing but you're standing upright.

If you have it only on certain characters, that also sounds like you've set up the keybind for walk somehow on those specific characters under keyboard controls.

i've encountered this before on my magden. i moved even slower when i toggled the walk button, so it's not really related to that, at least as far as i'm aware.

So you're NOT talking about the "Walk/Run" toggle, which I believe is about autorun rather than speed??? Where in the settings can I find what you're referring to?

Anyhow, the speed I'm talking about is a heavy snare that seems even slower than stealth.

No that's it, sorry I guess rather than 'jog' the default is 'run'

Under Controls, Autorun is specifically for autorun, it continuously moves you forward in whatever movement mode you're in. Toggle Walk/Run is the 'slow walk/fast walk' toggle.

Sprint which is what players actually consider running is under the Combat grouping with Crouch (Stealth).

So you want to make sure 'Toggle Walk / Run' has no binding, or else be extremely careful with it.

(Slow) Walk is sometimes used by roleplayers and it can help inch up to a particular skyshard in Murkmire which is easy to overshoot.

When I was starting out in ESO I went through all the controls and stuff and set up a keybind for the walk/run toggle. But never actually used it.

Then weeks later I found myself in a similar situation 'why the heck am I so slow' and eventually traced it back to that keybind was somehow getting pressed.

Research supports your hypothesis. The characters on which I recall this happening did have a keybind for that toggle.

    Thanks!!!!!

This bug is present on PS4 as well, it happened to my wife in wayrest sewers yesterday.

There were no buffs/debuffs active on her. Walking and running were both very very slow, everyone in the group walked faster then she ran.

Logging in and out fixed it.
