What happens when you fail to excavate an item? Do you eventually get another shot at it? What happens if you choose Abandon? Does the item disappear?

✭When you fail to excavate just use the Q button , this will show you another dig site nearby so you just keep getting more chances in the same area.
When you abandon a dig you just do another but you will need to scry again for another new location if that makes sense.
1. When you fail to excavate an item you just keep trying by using the Q button and moving to a nearby dig
2. When you abandon a dig item you then need to start a new one so you need to scry for a whole new item location.
