Here's my take on the classic mage robe from Skyrim, i know its pretty simple and not that fancy, but used it to role-play while questing through Greymoor (With the staff and a standard black horse, i felt i was as close as possible to what low level Skyrim felt like)

    Destined to Be a Mage
She was a bar tender/cook at a large local tavern. On this particular night the place was packed. Lots of eating, drinking and general raucous behavior ruled, and the staff was busy, busy, busy. At one point, she picked up a large tray which had four platters of fried spinerperch, with all the fixings and turned to deliver the entrees to their owners.

But just then, as if out of nowhere, a black cat, with oddly glowing blue stripes all over its body, leapt up onto the table, intent on reaching the delicacies she carried. Startled, she stumbled backward, dumping the entire tray right on top of the tavern owner, who fell backward into the fire. As his clothes lit up, he rolled out and started to pound the flaming fabric with his hands. But the fiery logs that came spilling out ignited several other flammables in the area, and the fire started to spread. Quickly, she grabbed the closest bucket of liquid and launched it toward the flames.
However, cooking oil is a poor substitute for water in such circumstances. The resulting fireball sent all the patrons frantically rushing for the doors. Deciding that discretion was the better part of valor, she quickly ducked out the back door and into the back alley, heading down side streets as quickly as she could. But she could hear the sounds of pursuit. Apparently, tavern owners and patrons get angry when you burn down their tavern. Who knew?

Dashing down the dark streets, making turn after turn, trying to elude her pursuers, she found herself somewhat boxed in and out of desperation, tried to open a door. Thankfully, it was not locked. She slipped inside, put the bar down across the door, securing it from the inside. She found herself in a very clean room which had a number of chairs as well as twenty or thirty robes hung up around the room. On impulse, she grabbed a robe, put it on, pulled up the hood, and sat down to catch her breath.
But then, a few minutes later, the inner door opened. Very quietly, a dozen people of various genders and races entered the room. They barely acknowledged her presence as they donned robes of their own and then sat in quiet meditation. Finally, another woman appeared in the doorway. She wore robes that were much more ornate than the rest of the group. She simply said “ Let’s go “ with a slight smile on her face. Not really knowing what to do, the girl stood and took her place at the back of the line that was forming. The leader looked at her and pointed to the floor. “you weren’t supposed to bring familiars “ she said sternly. The girl looked down and stared as the cat looked back at her with its glowing blue eyes. I must still smell like fish the girl thought.
Everything was a blur from that point. Sitting in a candle lit room. Reciting .. words … with the others. Drinking wine, which was very good, from a golden chalice and passing it on to the next person. And then a final pronouncement. Apparently she had just joined some sort of Order.
Then each person waited while, one by one, they were escorted in to have a discussion with the Master of the order. Being at the end of the line, she went in last. The order head was an Altmer, probably very old (who can tell?) tall, strong and oddly enough, a very neatly trimmed white beard to go with the long white hair. He sat behind a desk in an expansive room, a single chair had been placed in front of the desk. He motioned for her to sit.

He spoke with genuine confidence. “Congratulations” he said “upon being promoted into the order. We have something for you.” He waved to the leader, who seemed to have a look of concern on her face, and was carrying what was obviously the type of staff a mage carried and used. “This is for you “ he said, as the girl gently took the staff. “We have one last test”. He pointed to a charred combat practice dummy at the wall to the east side of the building. “Use the power of the staff to shoot the target”.
Terror, would be the best description of what she felt at that moment. She stood up with the staff and pointed it at the dummy. “Just a quick one shot” the Master interrupted. “Nothing major”.
Her mind was spinning, having no idea what to do. She thought hard, and harder and just imagined magic power shooting out of the staff….
    Aaaand it did.
Lightning of gargantuan proportions flooded from the staff, blasting directly into the dummy. Her mind was overwhelmed. She was paralyzed watching the electricity bombard the target… and the shelves… and the windows… and scorched the stone walls…. and all the while the Master simply sat back in his chair, arms folded, completely expressionless, while the electricity cleared everything from his desk top.
    And finally, it stopped.
Everything was silent as the smoke drifted out of the holes where windows had been. “Sir .. “ the leader began, but he snapped his hand up, two fingers held high, and she said nothing more. He sat in quiet contemplation for several minutes. “Where is the map?” he finally said. “Well, it was on that wall” she replied, pointing at the charred mass. “Ah”, he said, “No matter. Send a missive to Vulkel Guard, to Valaste. Tell her to expect this young member’s arrival.”
    “Sir?” the leader asked incredulously.
“Someone”, the Master said calmly “performed the rite of consecration into our order, and this young lady was accepted as part of that rite. Therefore, she is a member of the order now.” The leader stood quietly, quite in shock. “The king of Wrothgar is sending recruiters to all the major cities for some major issue he has.” the Master continued as he opened the lower drawer of the desk. “Here it is. Recruiter name in Vulkel Guard is … Stuga. Valaste is to prepare this young lady, and when ready, report to Stuga.”
“Sir, Vulkel guard is the furthest Mage Guild from here.” The leader said. “Your point being?”, the Master asked. “The amount of time it will take for her to arrive there and… get prepared… might be quite extensive.”
“Stuga is an Orc in their military” the Master replied with a shrug. “She will wait for as long as she has to. That’s the way Orcs are. And don’t forget to mention to Valaste that in preparing this young lady, what she does when sent on this mission reflects as much on their Guild as it does our Order.”
“Sir”, the girl asked hesitantly. “What exactly am I supposed to do?”
He handed her a book “Read this from cover to cover, then do it again, then again, then again. In all things let your conscience be your guide”
And he added, with a slight smile, “and when that doesn’t work… use the staff”.
“and make sure to take that cat with you.”

@Asdara As I'm not completely sure what you're interested in... Is the topic about what our mage or scholar characters generally wear, or does it have to look like a "typical" mage outfit? Because my main char is a mage, but he's dressed extremely differently depending on the occasion (travelling overland in cold/warm climates, relaxing at home, official matters,...). He also has the tendency to adjust his style to the country he currently visits, to blend in and avoid attracting too much attention. So, while he has some outfits that look typical for a mage, he also has many that would fit any random commoner as well.

Well it has to look like typical "mage outfit", i mean if you roam around dressed with only the pink orc belt i don't really see the "mage look" in this. But if you do have variant of outfit depending on the occasion, with always that "mage" feels to it, yeahhhh bring it!

Nah. I was the person assigned by Valaste to train her.

You notice Stuga still hanging around? It'll probably be awhile yet before she's ready for her mission

Here is my main and my secondary characters. Veric Blackwood is an all-around mage, with a focus on conjuration. In battle he keeps his Scamp, his Daedroth, and his greater Storm Atronach with him. He's also a vampire, which helps him stay alive longer to keep accumulating knowledge.

My secondary, Xhiak-Qoa'cthurus, is an Argonian mage with a penchant for Frost magic. He even managed to turn his body into crystalfrost after enough experiments with the chilling element. He currently resides in a small home with 2 other Argonians in the Glenumbra Moors.
