To those who have switched from console to PC - How did you adjust to the controls?

I just recently built a gaming PC but have been several hundred, if not thousand hours into ESO on OneX. I know there is no account transfer ( which let us be honest, is the dumbest thing ) but I know that in general PC has better frames and overall a smoother experience than console. While, I do not play much at the moment and may never make the switch ( a large part of it depends on how the games run on the newer consoles, and if I even buy those at all, since again, gaming PC.. ) .

Long story short, how did you adjust to the different controls? Or do you still use a controller? Did you use a controller but also practice with M/K until you got comfortable?

With great difficulty - took months. But now I can't go back to controller. It's so limiting. The one thing I did have to do was get an mmo sort of mouse with 6 extra buttons. All my 5 skills and bar swap are on mouse.

I am not sure I could have gotten used to the skill buttons and bar swap being on the keyboard - I have no idea how ppl press the 1 to 5 keyboard buttons and go back to WASD smoothly. I just couldn't do it.

MMO mouse and a left hand Gamepad is what I do. Check out the MMO mouses from Razer.

I made that switch a while ago, though. Not in ESO, but in shooters (counter strike about 20 years ago). Too each their own, but mouse/keyboard is objectively a more accurate and robust interface. It will feel clumsy for about a month, and then you will probably never want to go back. I only use a controller for small minority of games. The one game type I find a controller to be superior is a third person action game with a LOT of platforming. The new star wars game comes to mind.

There are just too many buttons I feel like I need to use in this game to make a controller worth. I have tried, and did not like it one bit. Other than bar swap and ultimate, both my left thumb and index finger respectively, I can do my entire rotation with my right thumb (all skills, bash, dodgeroll) and right index finger (light/heavy attack). Makes it easy to kills stuff with beer in hand. haha

I use the Razer Wolverine Elite controller, and it has a plug and play function for both Xbox and PC. 6 programmable paddles make it easy to hotkey functions. Keyboard and mouse just feels super stiff and clumsy to me, like there is less fine movement control.

Maybe it's weird but I've never had trouble going between console and PC games, although I don't think I've ever tried playing exactly the same game on both (at least not without a very long gap in between). The nearest I've come is things like playing Morrowind on PC, Oblivion and Skyrim on the Xbox and ESO on PC, but the control systems are different in each game so it's not really the same. I have had trouble with mixing up button positions between controllers, or functions which are on different buttons in different games, but I think a controller and a keyboard and mouse are different enough that they're entirely seperate in my mind.

Having said that I do find the default keyboard layout difficult in ESO. I'm not sure how much of that is because I'm left-handed (so my right hand is on the keyboard) but I know a lot of right-handed people rebind the keys as well to get something they're more comfortable with.

I put all the combat abilities onto the number pad - skills 1-5 on those numbers, synergy on 6, quick slot on 7, interrupt on 8, ultimate on 9, dodge on 0, crouch on enter and weapon swap on + (I can't remember now what's on the decimal). Then I use my thumb on the arrow keys to move, right-ctrl to jum, right-shift to spring and I have things like run, walk, shethe weapon, mount, F and open menu on the little block above the arrow keys. Other things I don't need quick access to are on the main section of the keyboard still.

That won't work if you're right-handed of course, but the important thing is to find a layout that's comfortable for you.

When i play my pc account, i use ps4 controller. It took me so long to learn how to use it, but now i prefer it over mouse n keyboard. I play with the vertical inverted and there is a problem with it on pc, you can't scroll down long texts, like guild info or such. It works if i un-invert. I have not played for a while though on pc, maybe it's fixed.

Never used a controller, but I can definitely recommend a left hand game pad for PC gaming. They put many more keys within easy (and easily memorized) reach, especially if it has a good thumb mini-joystick.

They generally claim to be higher build quality and more reliable, sometimes with faster response times too. But the biggest difference is they have lots of extra buttons. Here's an example:

    849289-805914-800.jpg

That 12 button thumb pad on the side, and the extra buttons on the top, are all programmable so you can bind whatever you want to it. That allows you to do things like activate skills with your mouse hand, so you only need to use the keyboard for movement. Basically it gives you more options, and more buttons you can reach at once without having to move your hand to find them.

(There's less extreme options too, I have a 'gaming mouse' with 5 extra buttons - 3 on top and 2 on the side which can also be bound to any keyboard key.)

If you dont mind doing most of your rotation with your left hand, then you dont need one.

Most MMO mice have 12 buttons on your right thumb. A little overwhelming at first, but once you get used to it, I think it is much better. Allows you to control every aspect of your rotation in your dominant hand, and leaves your left hand free for character movement with WASD. It's been years since I made the switch, but my DPS doubled over night when I did, and my survivability went up.

Mine is very similar to the above image. I use the first two rows for skills and dodge roll, and the last two rows for my quicklsot. I like to keep bar swap on my left thumb, as more advanced rotations require a LOT of bar swapping. I found bar swap in addition to all my skills on my right thumb was just a bit much.

I almost gave up; trying to find the right number key while moving around in a combat situation was overwhelming. I couldn't get over having to pause my movement to use a skill or swap bars or, well, anything because every single thing I'd ever have to do other than LA and block defaults to the left hand. It was like trying to use a controller one-handed.

I got myself a cheap 7-button mouse from Wal-Mart and put all my active skills over there. Remapped the number keys as my menus. Gave my left pinky a couple of buttons to be responsible for. There was still a learning curve, but it was nowhere near as steep.

Razer Naga changed gaming for me.

Even better, they've just started putting orders out for a left-hand version of the latest version of the Naga.

I'm right-hand myself but it's cool that they actually have an option there. Left-hand mice are rare as it is... MMO mice are metaphorical unicorns in this regard.

    I still use a controller.

    This ^

Easier to move at variable speeds and controller vibrations can be fun. I use an xbone controller on pc since it works natively with windows.

One of the things that keeps me from moving back to windows is i hate having to use a kb/m to navigate windows, launch the game, login, and pick a char. Being able to use the controller to do all that is nice, though on console i have a wireless kb for chatting.

The walk speed issue is why I do like controllers for games with lots of platforming. That said, in ESO, I never need to move at half speed while in combat, and there really is no platforming in this game unless you are just derping around. I recently just bought the new Razer Tartaus (left hand game pad: https://www.razer.com/gaming-keypads/Razer-Tartarus-Pro/RZ07-03110100-R3U1) that actually has variable pressure on the keys if you want it. But to be candid, not sure I ever really see my self using it in ESO.

I'm used to typing on a keyboard with all fingers and not looking at it, so once i manage to learn what key does what, keyboard is much easier than controller. especialy since it doesn't requiere fine tuning (if 3 is your 3 skill , then you just need to smash it. Whereas controller and it "floating" movement / skills is really hard on me :(

What I don't like about buttons on the side of the mouse is that putting sideways pressure on the mouse for your key presses means you're continuously squeezing it while trying to point. I prefer to do the pointing and clicking with a light touch, and doing most key presses on a platform that doesn't move.

Gamepad to start but start training with M+K.

To those in difficulties adapting to m+k, practise makes perfection :)

PS - the layout in M+K is cooler than the gamepad's.

When I started playing eso I used a gamepad cause I thought it would be easier to master the controls. When I made the switch to mouse and keyboard I didnt look back, I'm left handed so I have no problem hammering my rotation with my left hand & I've used a right handed mouse for my entire pc life so its secod nature to me now. That said my mouse is the steel series rival with two side buttons which I use for my ultimate and potion/quickslot, this free up keyboard space and works feels really smooth for me. I dont use 1-5 for my abilities, for me its E-F-C-R-X.

Partly depends where you play too. Mouse / kb is fine if you’re at a desk or table, but imo controller wins for couch / recliner / bed. Even if you get some kind of tray or something for those situations it’s a lot easier to put a controller down to get up for something than move all that crap.

No one says you have to pick one only and as others said practice will make you better.

I switched over from PS4 a couple months ago now.

I tried KB + Mouse for maybe a few hours and it's not for me. Just literally plug in an Xbox controller (Seems to work better than PS4 and more comfortable) and switch to gamepad mode in settings :)
