Changing our ESO UserID

I've learned that we can change our ESO UserID, and it seems to be a relatively simple process. However, I'd like to know from folk who've done this, are there any precautions I should take and are there any adverse effects e.g. with addons?
"So, drinking is a sacrament to Y'ffre... because it's his way of reminding us not to take things too seriously... You know how the other Elves are. Altmer have their crystal towers, and that's how they want to be — cold and perfect. And Dunmer are just like their Red Mountain — smouldering and dark. We just want to have a drink and not worry about it."

You can just change you @name in the eso account area of the main eso site. You can then manually find/replace it in your saved user variables, or just set everything up again.

You won't need to "redo" anything at all. Just make sure you are careful and have the exact, correct information for your new I.D.

I've changed mine three times over the years and it is easy. Doesn't affect your game at all, just your I.D.

Unless the process has changed, it’s done via ticket request without the opportunity to confirm whether the newly requested @name is already in use. So assuming it’s important that you get one you want, I recommend requesting several alternatives and prioritize them in case one of them is in use.
When I changed mine around the begininng of this year, I just did that through the ESO website and no tickets of any kind were involved, it was changed effectively immediately.

Of course it did break the addons.
At the time I put together some simple .BAT file script to automatically replace all occurences of my old @name with the new in the SavedVariables, since there was far too much of it to edit by hand.

On a more unexpected note, it did also cause some confusion with my in-game friends, because I forgot to notify them in advance. So I got a lot of /whispers asking who I was and why I was on their friendslist :)

Thanks for your response, @TwinLamps, but I'm also unsure of what you mean. Are you saying I'd need to reinstall them all and/or replace their saved variables?

Every single addon that requires setting up will need to be set up.
    From lorebooks to srendar.
These are tied to account name/character name.
If you change character name only, some addons that are set up as account based will be unchanged
But if you change account name, you are in for a set-it-up-all addon marathon

Just curious....what's the point behind changing your UserId?

So assuming it’s important that you get one you want, I recommend requesting several alternatives and prioritize them in case one of them is in use.

Also, syncing your forum account to use same as in-game is a separate process (used to be), with a limited number of renames allowed.

BTW, as stated above, your saved variables will have references to the old @name, some of which can be manually updated.

It's my real-life surname. When I created my account earlier this year, I didn't realise that it would be the name used for e-mails, friends, guilds etc. rather than my characters' names (as it was in LotRO, the only other MMORPG I've played), so I'm a bit uncomfortable having it so prominently displayed. When I discovered that it can be changed, I though I might as well go for it.

Thanks @Sacadon, that's good advice. I've already changed my forum name, and want to synch my account with it.

@mairwen85 and @JanTanhide Fantastic! Thank you both; knowing that is a great relief!

Thanks @Major_Lag, it's good to know that this is now a relatively painless exercise... most of the info I found in the forums was pretty outdated. Unfortunately I'm not savvy enough to create a .BAT file, but it seems Notepad++ may be the solution.

Ah... and I hadn't considered my friends list, but fortunately it's extremely short and therefore it'll be easy to forewarn everyone. So thanks also for that!

Might be a good opportunity to "clean the closet" with unused addons!

Thanks for elaborating, @TwinLamps; it looks like I'm in for a marathon then! @Donny_Vito, fortunately my Addon folder is uncluttered (although fairly full!) Ah well, Phynaster represents the virtue of patience and the achievement of victory by taking the slower but surer path, so I guess it's time for me to walk the talk (pun intended!)

I'm happy to report that my name change went smoothly, and was complete within a matter of minutes! \o/ I also avoided the marathon slog of updating my addons by following this guide to using Notepad++ that I found here in the forums in order to change my saved variables (my eternal gratitude to @LoneStar2911 for providing this information!)

My thanks also to everyone who kindly offered their advice, expertise and experience in this thread... much obliged, folks! May the Divines bless and keep you.
