Outfit question: can I take the skin of an armor and use that permanently?

So I have a chest armor that I've out-leveled, but I really like the skin it offers. Is there a way to make the skin for that armor a permanent part of my outfit?

I've googled this and haven't found an answer. It looks like a lot of the selectable skins are fixed and based on unlocks, but in my case I want to use the skin of an actual piece of equipment, even if I am no longer equipping it.

Yes you can. You have to find out what style it is and then buy or earn the motif. I guess it's a chest motif you want.

Look up the Outfit system. It works exactly this way,

If you learn the style you can use it as an outfit.

I think OP is asking about a system in other MMOs (I'm not super experienced but I saw it in Neverwinter) where you could select the appearance of an equipment item in your inventory, usually destroying said item in the process. (Ex: during the short time I played NW I wanted some basic boots, so I bought a low level pair in the auction house and transmogged my equipped gear with it.). Unfortunately you can't do that.

When you look at the item, up where it tells you what weight it is, it should tell you what style. You'll have to get the motif chapter for that style, usually in guild store. Good luck!

You can also use a site like this to find the names of styles you like and how to acquire them:

A very few styles in game are not available in the outfit system, but most are.

If you deconstruct something in this game, you can get back the Style Mat and use that to make other gear in the same motif, as long as you know the Motif for that piece.

However, with the Outfit Station, all you have to know is the Motif to apply that look to any gear in the game of the same type (Chest or Legs etc)

Note, leveling materials do look different than end game materials, so if you like the lower level stuff, like L28 or L24 Argonian is really cool, then you have to learn that material level by deconning something from that level. Then you can make any gear look like that level in the Outfit station.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

My example would be Khajiit robe; I love the low level version of it, don't care for the upper levels. So on the outfit system, where I have unlocked all the basic racial styles, I went back and created an outfit that uses it.

Yes, I would absolutely prefer a version where I could use/destroy a bit of armor to transfer the "look" to another bit of armor, but outfit system is what we got.

This is the default Khajiit robe for "max level". It's nice, but it's a bit too busy for me.

This is the "lowbie" version of the robe. This is the one I prefer, and use.

Each character gets one "free" outfit slot and if you want more, you need to buy them. Individually. Each "extra slot" is only for "that character" and it gets spendy fast. So far I have not done so. Others use this system a lot.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis
