I think it is because the game is checking whether it is valid for you to be in that instance or not.
And if not, it puts you back in the last valid location.
For example:
- You own Sleek Creek
- Your friend owns Sleek Creek
- While you are in your friend's Sleek Creek, you log out
Next time you log in, the game will decide that you cannot be in your friend's Sleek Creek and kick you out to a valid location.
This would be your own Sleek Creek, in the same relative position where you logged out in your friend's Sleek Creek.
If you actually do not own Sleek Creek it would try to find out where you were before you entered your friend's Sleek Creek, and put you back there.
I think the longer load time is figuring these things out. If you logged out in what the game considers a valid location, like your own house, I don't believe it takes quite as long.

The only problems I ever have regarding my houses (and it's not every day, but does happen occasionally) is sometimes leaving a house, or porting to one from an in-game zone.
Both of those "normal" situations have triggered endless loadscreens (to the point of having to use Task Manager to force-quit).
And occasionally, I get stuck, like everyone else, in an endless loadscreen while attempting to log-in from the Character Select screen.
But I have not seen a noticeable difference in loading a character who is in a house versus one who is out in the wild.
Sometimes loading to a character in a house is pretty quick, sometimes it's not. Same as for characters who aren't in a house.
