Melee "staff" weapons

Playing my magblade, I really hate the aesthetics of staff. I much prefer my stamblade just from the use of daggers. What if there was a dual wield weapon for magicka users? Something like a kama would be pretty sweet. It would also add some more depth to the woodworking skill.

Staff melee combat reminds me of how awesome Staff Fighting was in City of Heroes. And now I'm sad :(

Or Scepters/Wands. Would look silly, but at least there would be some variant.
Or even make an option to fight with a staff in melee like quarterstaff. Some animations are there, like Relequen/Pinnacle Factotum, just add 2 more and call it a day.

I love this idea. Sometimes I really just want to hit someone on the head with my stick.

I really hope they add another mag weapon skill line with the next chapter instead of another class. Any mag weapon!
Seeing as stam has 3 skills with 7 weapons to choose from and even more combinations, it would be nice to have a bit of variety for mag. We only have one skill and out of the 3 possible choices for it they've taken one away for tanks. Would be nice to have a choice beyond fire or lightning, which isn't really a choice anyway!

And to quote a Discworld novel: 'anything that couldn't be disposed of with a couple of whacks from six feet of oak was probably immune to magic as well.'

I'm not sure of the details but apparently there was 1h and rune early on but nothing has ever come of it
I also want a new magicka weapon but i really DONT want it to be elemental magic, fact is no matter what class your gonna be defaulted to the elements due to the ele staff. So yeah im hoping it will be a 'magic' type damage magicka weapon.

I'd vote for unarmed spellcasting which would fix alot of the necromancer issues with weapons dissapearing on class skill use.
Or obv one hand and rune so i can finally play the melee mages with a melee weapon.

I'd be so cool with an Athame or ritual dagger, they wouldn't even need to add new new weapon animations or weapon models, just use a normal dagger, but make it so magic damage

I'd really love it if they introduced something like mages gloves that can be equipped as weapons and allow you to send out orbs of fire or something as light attacks. Picture the light attack toggle from the psijic skill line.
In TES games tons of mages didn't use any weapons at all and wielded magic with their hands only, I wish we had that option too.

Imo it would be a bit lame if they finally add a new weapon type and it is another staff...

tbh, the entire concept of railroading magic users into staves runs so contrary to everything Elder Scrolls has ever been. I get that it's a different genre than the mainline TES games, but Elder Scrolls features are at the very bottom of the priority list for Elder Scrolls Online. I've seen other MMO's that are closer in spirit to an Elder Scrolls game than ESO, so the whole "It's an MMO" argument doesn't really hold.

Why I can't use a melee weapon with mag abilities makes absolutely no sense in an Elder Scrolls game. I guess I can pop mag enchantments on my dual wield or 2h, or run Pelinal's, but this is Elder Scrolls, it shouldn't take that.

I think this is a lot simpler than a lot of people are taking it as. The game has shifted a bit towards stamina as the major combat mechanic to balance out movement.

Stamina is used for block/dash/bash/sprint. If someone's sitting in the boss's face, we now have to balance out moving out of the red versus blocking versus doing damage. Your melee weapons are also costing stamina for that as well. That's why it's tough to PUG a dungeon, especially as a tank, when the magDPS decides to sprint between bosses since they don't need that attribute... and then the stamDPS or tank are not able to block or do anything since they have no resources.

It used to be pretty well that class abilities were mag based and weapon abilities were stam based. They've started adding stam morphs for some class ability morphs so a stam character could really focus, but magicka was always intended to be a character at range. Being in closer would either make them OP since they don't have to worry about the block vs attack idea that melee DPS have, or it'd mean they'd need to hybrid themselves so they could deal with the evasion you need being up close. I wouldn't be surprised if a hypothetical mag melee weapon ended up being underpowered to balance that out.

Then there's also the simple logic of: if you're swinging a sword at someone's face, whether it's a magic sword or a metal one, it takes a bit of muscle behind it. You get sweaty = stam needed. If you're doing it with your mind, then why stand in their face in the first place? Go ranged, stay out of their face, and fling your fireballs.

The fun part about adding a new weapon like a 'rune' (which if we look at TES games in general would be casting spells, many of which are still ranged. There are 'on touch' spells, but I'd easily see some of those end up with 'on target' morphs) would be that it would still need to be equipped like a weapon. 2 of the set slots are weapon-based, so that means we'd need to be able to make them in sets (spellcrafting skillline), and we'd have to have them drop from current sets. And you thought it was annoying to farm for your Maelstrom weapons now... Imagine if they added another thing to that loot table - or if they really wanted to go all out to make a fire/ice/shock rune and add three new things.

Not to say that's a completely bad thing - I know one of my biggest wants is a melee stam staff so we could get spears/polearms/quarterstaves, and it would come with the same issue. That'd even make us have to grind another motif page for crafting (or they could be nice and just unlock the spears with the staff page and call it 'polearms' or something. Or combine the daggers and swords pages and change the now open one to spears). Same idea though of having to grind all of the research out again, not to mention making 90+ models for a spear (which I would love to see).

Another note - crafting for these hypothetical runes: where would you do it? Spears or quarterstaves would likely be woodworking since there's less on that table than the others in the first place, but there's not an easy place to make runes. Enchanting tables? Then each crafting site would need an enchanting table. Jewelry tables? Makes more sense, and would be easier to add in. The other fun part is materials, since jewelry and enchanting don't use the same level breaks as the other weapons do, so that could be an indirect nerf/buff.

So in conclusion, adding a new weapon line has a lot going into it. I'd really like spears, but it could be redundant. I could easily see them adding another mag weapon line, but that would take back end work and wouldn't make much sense to make a full melee based line anyway.

But hey, if Colovia or wherever next year wants to surprise us with battlemages using spears and on-touch spells and they can integrate it well, sign me up.

Taken away for tanks? Really? Tanks are the ONLY true viable hybrid in the game and before the ice staff they had no way to restore magicka with a heavy attack(or rather, not one that fit their toolbox well). Before the ice staff the only weapon tanks had was the S&B. Ice in this game is a CC type ability...which fits tanks a LOT better than DPS. I for one am thrilled that tanks now have 2 weapon choice that fit their toolbox....although I do feel that it would have been better to give tanks a staff from a different school(alteration, whatever) rather than reduce the magicka DPS options by one.

That being said, more magicka weapon options could only ever be a good thing....especially melee weapons...then you could give DPS back their ice staff, since aside from magDK, other magicka DPS are going to prefer ranged anyway. For that matter, as far as I am concerned they don't even have to be new weapons, existing weapons could simply be modified to do magicka damage and restore magicka instead....a magicka sword or magicka bow.(New weapons would be ideal, but I would happily settle for a reworking of existing ones)

The point wasn't that tanks shouldn't have a mag weapon. They obviously should. That doesn't change that the very limited choices for mag was reduced by a third.

As a tank, you were really happy with the change because it gave you options and opened up different play styles. Only saying that's all I'd like for mag
