Too much Nord-syle art!

All the Character back screens have had nord art foisted on them.
What happened to the Culteral Appropriate screens?
1/12 of my characters are Nords and object to this.

I'm surprised that we don't have a choice to flip between the chapter background and the faction one.
So they raised the floor and lowered the ceiling. Except the ceiling has spikes in it now and the floor is also lava.

It's a not-so-subtle promotion for the Greymoor chapter. Like the leads dropping for characters who have no means for scrying or excavating them, it's meant to instill in us a desire to "upgrade". For those of us who did, I would have appreciated it if keeping the old backgrounds had at least been an option, but - meh. It's not as if I was paying much attention to the character loading screen anyway after years of playing.

What culturally appropriate backgrounds? My Dunmer have been freezing in Skyrim and my Breton sweating in Alikr since forever.

Variety would be nice, though. Imagine buying a cheap pack of backgrounds in the Crown store if we wanted to.

Honestly, I would. It's the definition of not essential. I really like having a Skyrim background.

I’d rather have no background art if it meant that the game didn’t repeatedly crash on character selection.

Oh and the bottom left ad space they’ve crowbarred in can f right off too.

While I understand the purpose ( -> advertising) I don't think it makes sense to show chars at a place they not only aren't, but even can't get to (if you don't have the chapter). Still would prefer the bg to show the homeland (not faction, but according to race) or the currect location. Or something more or less neutral.

This was probably this most unnecessary change they could have made it makes me tab out between logging in, then briefly back to select character then out again until I'm certain it has loaded. Doesn't help that the background music is absolutely awful this time around.
Homeland background would be nice, alternately something neutral.

Getting to choose would be the best, but I'd settle for backgrounds that fits the race of the character. Not the current chapter nor the faction I've chosen.

Annoying that even the loading screens are Greymoor themed.

Agreed. I used to feel sweaty just looking at my heavy armor orc and his cave bear mount just standing in the blazing alikr desert. I will miss the Auridon background though, it was beautiful.

I actually really like the music. It's very Skyrim-y, and it also wouldn't be terribly out of place in a Soulsborne game. Parts of it remind me of Omen from Bloodborne, or Dark Souls III's Prologue. I know these probably aren't selling points for you. :p

I think the best solution would be to have the background match whatever zone you logged off of your character in.

I always felt weird about having some poor Argonian standing in that freezing Eastmarch background. Like, I wanted to give him a coat and a space heater.
The newer Skyrim background is much nicer.

You mean like the one with the Orc standing in the desert, or the Argonian standing next to a Nord ship on a wintery river bank.

ESO has never had culturally-appropriate character screens. They've been based on Alliance faction, which itself
    was a poor choice.
They SHOULD have gone with culturally-appropriate character screens, based on the race of the character currently selected.
It wouldn't have been difficult at all to come up with a few more screens so we could have one for every race.

That said, I like the current screen. I would still like to see character-based screens, but I don't think it's a bad idea to use temporary screens based on the current content, either.

Also - the addition of the generic background image came with a misaligned Character Select U.I. - cutting off the view of the non-combat pet. While certainly not game-breaking by any means - it seems to illustrate one of many cut-corners, and an increased lack of attention to detail in many areas.

The old backgrounds were SO outdated, and faction is a MUCH more minor part of a character than it was when ESO started. Tamriel Unlimited made alliance only matter in Cyrodiil

The new character select are really nice and pretty. All my characters are DC and I'm elated to not look at a yucky desert anymore. I don't think it's a greedy promotion for Greymoor to give us something nice and relevant to look at

Yes, they were outdated. I really don't care about Alliance anymore, either. Not at all. It is a nuisance when I need to go dig up what Alliance a character supposedly belongs to.

I do prefer a non-Chapter background, though. It is new, but it is a step backwards by having only the one. I actually like the idea presented above to use a background that represents where your character logged out. I would not necessarily go by zone, but by region (province).

Factions doesn't really matter anymore, except for Cyrodiil, and having the background change to wherever you logged off sounds overcomplicated with too much work behind it.

Easier and more fitting to let us choose between some existing ones, or have them be based on what race the character is.

Well Nords are the most popular faction/race since Skyrim as come out. ESO has always, at least, seems to lean their art towards the Nords. Which is a play off of the Vikings from Northern Scandinavia.
