Enchanter Surveys: worth it long term?

When Antiquities hit, I decided to pack up all my surveys since I'd be grinding each zone. My Enchanter Surveys were already a bit more than the other stacks since I'd already started to question their worth.

After a couple of zones, maybe 15-20 of these, I realized that they are basically not worth the time and destroyed the rest. Just to make sure I wasn't crazy, I did another eight today and same results. About 25 different runes, most of which I have thousands of.
  1. Can't refine or sell really, except kuta obviously which don't seem more prevalent here. No mundanes afaict which is the only other worth listing, no?
  2. Dailies? Oko was my smallest stack and still enough for years.
  3. Master writs? Don't think I'll run out here.
  4. Leveling a new toon? Have enough for so many but would rather just buy some if necessary.
  5. Housing? Haven't done much but did a brief check and seems like I have enough to furnish Tamriel many times.

What am I missing about the value of these? I stopped doing single nodes a long time ago but that seems like a better way to occasionally replenish.

You've outlined it pretty well, @phwaap.

I have the Enchanter hireling on only one character these days.

The only reason I keep doing surveys is to keep the inventory slots free ... and if some day (far in the future) ZOS does decide to change their usefulness.

I stopped doing enchanting surveys a few months ago. I have more mats than i need. Now, if i made more furniture which eats up Essences, then maybe i would need some supply.

Granted i have been collecting mats since launch and i have leveled 18 Alts by deconning.

Maybe it's worth crafting some furniture and sell it?
I don't know, I have the same issues with enchanting materials but I keep saving in hopes that it'll be useful one day.

The grahtwood enchanter survey is decon trash as are any that are more than a short run from a wayshrine. The ones next to wayshrines like the Rift and one of the colharbour ones are ok because they're adjacent to the wayshrines.

I find that the reason I'm doing the surveys is running out of tempers, and needing to refine for those. They get used up fast by furnishings, more so than the furnishing mats themselves. And the purples - Elegant Lining, Grain Solvent, Mastic, are the worst for running out just when you need them.

Praxes are fewer, so the Rekuta supply holds up well enough.

I’ll do them if I’m running low on kutas (and swear when they don’t drop any), or if they start overwhelming my inventory. Suuuuuure would be nice if surveys dropped furnishing mats too.

So, last night I knocked out my stockpile of Wrothgar surveys and ended up having 17 enchanting surveys in total. Out of those 17 surveys I got a whopping ZERO (0) Kutas!

I've had some bad streaks of RNG before, but getting zero Kutas out of 102 (17x6) Protean runestones must be some sort of personal record for me. Will definitely be deconning enchanting surveys that are farther than about a ten-second run from the nearest wayshrine.

Exactly. That's just a waste of time for junk. I decided to keep one stack (Stonefalls) and the rest get destroyed. It's been pretty nice hitting single nodes again and seeing mundanes. I wonder if the RNG is the same for surveys and single nodes for kutas. You sure get more chances with the latter.

    I keep ujsing them up.

    My bagged Runes are substantial.
I have >1K on the top level glyphs and all the common ones.

Just finishing levelling up a new character and this is burning up Ta and some other glyphs as I am trying to uprate my level each day. Still a couple to go.

Just an FYI - your character will get significantly more inspiration for extracting green, blue and purple glyphs than the basic white (Ta) ones. I checked my craft bag last night and have about 2.5k Ta runes, but something like 4k Jejota (green) and 4.5k Denata (blue). Likely because Ta's are used for daily crafting writs and the greens and blue are almost never used unless you don't want to waste a Rekuta on low-level training gear.

Bottom line... don't craft basic white glyphs for alts to decon. Make them at least blue, then finish with purple once they hit level 40-ish in the Enchanting skill line.

P.S. There used to be a chart somewhere on here that showed extraction inspiration caps at various Enchanting skill levels (ie. At level 5 enchanting you might get the same inspiration from extracting a level 25 blue glyph as you would a CP160 purple due to hard caps on the amount of inspiration given). If someone could link this for reference it would maximize your efficiency on leveling alts.

I try and pair that one with the Alchemy survey that's nearby. So I just ping-pong back and forth between the two, since you have to jump down the cliff and run around back up anyways.

it's because at max level of enchanting, you use 2 Oko each 3 day rotation. 1 for making your glyph of health, and 1 as the "extra" glyph to turn in.

Deni & Makko are only used 1 time in the 3 day rotation.

Ta is used 4 times (1 each for the 3 glyphs, then 1 more as the "extra") but Ta is much easier to source then Oko.

I rarely do crafting surveys any more. I have 18 characters, so I just make space to mule them all. And so I literally have thousands of surveys stashed away.

However, since we now typically have tons of CP160 Potencies, I have a simple method I follow, assuming your farming CP160 Mobs and making CP160 glyphs for alts to chew on:

L1 to L12 Decon Mob Looted Glyphs, Whatever they are, or Crafted Green Glyphs if desired
    L13 to L22/24 Blue Glyphs
    L24 to L46 Purple Glyphs

Then you can learn all the Essences and Potencies you don't know. That will get you close to if not at 50. This is assuming you have the Skill Points to invest in an Alts Enchanting and extra Essences. Otherwise, grind out some more Purples.

    Thanks @Nestor

I'm sitting on several unused character slots and will probably use master enchanting writs to level them to 50, so this helps maximize my efficiency in leveling the skill line.

I've used alchemy master writs for two other characters, but I think enchanting writs are a cheaper alternative based on material usage.

Aren't you mixing Alchemy and Enchanting here? No essences in enchanting. You have to make things for all levels for alchemy.

That page has some good details, but I would like to know "make X superb glyphs for X levels below 50" myself at least.

I find it much more effective to make superb ones rather than truly superb ones because the latter is much more expensive to replace, at least from the vendor.

I think he's referring to essence runes which are the ones that determine the actual effect like Deni = stamina, Oko = health, etc.

Potency runes determine the level of the glyph, Essence = effect, Aspect = Strength (color).

He's saying once you get the Enchanting skill to level 46 you should be able to finish it out to 50 just by crafting glyphs using combinations of unknown Potency and Essence runes since learning those gives a nice chunk of inspiration.
