I'm surprised more people don't talk more about Thrassian Stranglers. For casual pve they make the game way more fun to play.
Extra 4k spell damage with major sorcery. Pelinal's Aptitude/Leviathan for stam chars and werewolves and Slimecraw to scale that monster damage even more. I don't play pvp but one imagines the ganking potential to be... considerable.
Taking 40% extra damage really forces you to pay attention during previously completely safe overland content. Before using them I thought this would be a down side but it's completely a plus for me.
Sure pve is easy and the monstrous damage boost isn't needed but it sure is fun. Rip through public dungeons and wb's like never before but you can't sleep because of the damage taken boost.
Newbies come in to this game wanting to play a battlemage and generally being told that is impractical. Now it still gives up a lot over a dedicated build but will be strong enough to feel good to play. Pelinals + Twice Born Star with Lover and Thief, for a lot of damage and crit, or Mechanical Acuity, should easily do more damage than a traditional focused non-strangler build.
You build the stacks by devouring souls. Sweet RP. The stacks don't expire, so I'm not rushed to run through zones like an onslaught-type damage boosting mechanic, perfect. Stranglers are the god item of casual fun play. I hope they never change.
Also great for soloing normal group dungeons, or carrying pugs. I farmed Oraneth in Elder Root 1 for parts 9 times by queuing as tank (I did bring a taunt and hold boss aggro) while doing more damage than the rest of the party. Queues popped instantly and it was just a lot more fun to do this with stranglers than without, regardless of build.
I worry about that a little with this item. BiS for all classes in normal content is mother's sorrow/leviathan, slimecraw and pelinal's if you are stamina. I like it, I think the way it works now makes the game way more fun to play but designers and playerbases tend to hate items that feel mandatory. And to me this is the most mandatory feeling mandatory item in the compulsory history of mandatory items. The only change to this item that wouldn't seriously ruin my day would be baking this damage output/taken mechanic into every class for free so I could use different gear sets, especially on stam characters.
And for everything not combat related, Wild Hunt rings similarly just boost enjoyment 10x. Farming them for my alts for writs alone wouldn't be worth it but they sure are nice to have for that.
If I could change anything about the mythic grind I would have it let me focus more on the activities I enjoy more. Like make a lead work for any part of it's item or something. The fishing and running around looking for psijic portals isn't ruining my life but it's definitely the low point.
