New Motif Leads - Help!

I've just completed digging up my 25th map of the evening. All maps are for the vanilla zones, however I have not received a single lead for the new motifs! What am I doing wrong?

RNG hates you is the answer here :(

What zones did you focus on? I seem to get then frequently from Alik'r, Eastmarch, and the Rift, but that's probably because I focus on those zones now after noticing :P

If you bought them or they were obtained before the expansion. Most likely they will not produce a lead. A guildmate had this same kind of RNG.

Double OOF. I've purchased a boatload of treasure maps today, and now I fear that gold was not well spent! Oh well! Thank you for the replies. I'm going to call it for the night and try again tomorrow!

I got most of motif pages from overland treasure chests, not treasure maps. It happened in Stormhaven, Rivenspire, Alik'r, Auridon, Geeenshade. For some reason, no matter how many chests I open, I cannot get lead for motif in starter maps (khenarthi, betnik, etc.)

Not true. I had old treasure maps on my alt that's working on the 1000 chest achievement and they did produce leads. Not every one of them, but maybe every second?

I had 3 alts full of treasure maps, which I bought months ago. I have allllllmost finished all of the new motifs after digging them all up, but am still missing a couple of each one. I'd estimate that leads drop from about 1 in 5 treasure map.

I probably had about 1/3 of the zones drop the leads on the first chest. Most of the others were between 2-5. Four zones: Auridon, Mabal Tor, Stros M'kai and Deshaan were 10+. Finally finished them last night.

    Edit:

I was using a mix of maps old and new that I had saved up. Bought others from guild traders.

Yeah, I had a bunch saved up for when the Chapter launched, and I got several of the motif leads out of them when I opened them first day of Greymoor.

They're not in every zone, it's two per Alliance zone, including the starter zones (7 * 2 = 14). None from 25 seems a bit rough though.

O.o that's a thing? I must've opened several hundred overland chests in vanilla zones since Greymoor, farming for various antiquities and just running around, but not once have they dropped leads for me. Are you absolutely sure you found Ancestral motif leads in open world treasure chests?

Far as treasure maps go, I seem to have decent luck with starter zones, everywhere else it's like 1 in 20 for me, so about on par I guess. They're pretty cheap to buy at this point, which is probably what I'll do eventually.

I had a couple hundred maps from before the update and spent the first few days of the chapter just opening up chests and such... I got equal leads from maps and free range chests, except Rivenspire and K. Roost, no matter how many chests I opened up (not treasure maps) I never got a lead unless it was a map. I not only completed all the pages for myself, but sold about 50+ extras within the first few days. So I don't think it matters when the maps were bought, it is just RNG.

All zones (minus K. Roost) gets you 2 leads from each chest (if you get any)... K. Roost is actually 4 leads, if you get it.

This does not apply to me. I bought a bunch of treasure maps before Greymoor hit, and I got plenty of leads from those maps.

Before they changed motif leads difficulty to purple, I had been getting stable lead pack out of every 3-4 chests. Since then it is unstable as hell, very often getting no leads from 10 chests, but then 3, sometimes even 4, lead packs in a row.

And old maps do not have anything to do with this, loot generates on dig I believe.

Yes, I am absolutely sure about overland chests dropping motif leads. And they dropped two motifs, one green, and one blue/purple. I found ancestral elf chest lead, in Auridon, by opening chest, I found along the shore. Same thing in Stormhaven, it was overland chest. Treasure maps chests, only dropped motifs several times, even after I dug dozens of them.

Damn. My RNG must really suck lol. I went around Auridon looking for the tapestry thing lead, opened like 30-40 chests before found it, not one motif. Been opening chests in all other vanilla zones too, not quite as many but noticeable number, same result. All the motif leads I've gotten have been from treasure map chests and even then at like 1 in 20 rate in non-starter zones :/ (Starter zone more like 1 in 3-4)

WHAAAAAAT? I can't even begin to guesstimate how many overland chests I've opened in the vanilla zones, but I know for damn sure that I have yet to pull a motif lead or one of the new paintings out of the hundreds of chests that I've opened! I've always felt that my RNG is pure rubbish, and this just reinforces that notion!

I'm starting to think there is something not right. I got the Ancestral Orc motifs from Glenumbra, Betnikh, Alik'r and Bangkorai so quickly I scarcely noticed until oh, look, I've got all these motifs in my inventory, where did they come from. Trying to get the other six, from Rivenspire, Stormhaven and Stros, has been a complete failure.

It took me just under two hours last night to get the Bouyant Steel (Thrassian Strangler Part) lead from fishing in Stros. I've spent at least that on those three zones farming chests and not a single motif drop.

Question - do leads for specific motif books & pages drop from specific zones’ Treasure Map chests?

ie. does 89 Ancestral High Elf drop from AD zone chests; 88 from DC; and 87 from EP?

I got a refund for Greymoor, but have been farming great deals on pages from the GTs (only have 2/56 to go!) - but noticed that some seem more rare than others (ie. not as common for sale in traders).

Wondering if the rarity I have perceived is due to some specific page leads dropping from less-frequented areas or ones that are out of the way / have more difficult content / etc.?

    S.

I'm pretty sure Ancestral Motif leads are only supposed to drop from Treasure Map chests and not treasure chests in general, so I'm not so sure if that's where people are getting them from (and not getting them from Map chests and only noticing it after looting a normal chest).

As for the Chapters themselves, like others I was getting leads probably every 2-6 Maps on average. Felt like a decent drop rate to me, so I hope they haven't actually nerfed it and made them harder to get. Treasure Maps themselves aren't exactly something you can reliably farm for leads, after all.

    @ShawnLaRock
Yep, that's how it works. The Motifs are split amongst the matching Alliance zones, so for Ancestral High Elf, the Chapters are split up amongst all the AD zones. Every time you get a lead you get it for two Chapters (which always drop from the same zone, so Auridon will always give you the leads for Ancestral High Elf Bows and Chests), except for Khenarthi's Roost, which will give you four leads (since AD has one less zone than the other two Alliances).

So, I guess the pages I need are from “crap” zones where no one wants to go. Lol.

Edit: I have a super great guild, and one person in particular sometimes gives me first dibs on pages - and the ones they offer are frequently the same... due to them farming other items in those specific zones (as per the confirmation above). Great clarification.

I do not think motif pages drop in overland chests. I completed all 3 motifs with treasure maps (mostly with treasure maps I already had before expansion, bought a couple), found none at all in chests.

You'll always get the motif leads in pairs (or all 4 in Khenarthi's Roost) assuming you don't have any of that zone's motif leads currently unscried or unexcavated.

So, if you have multiple treasure maps for a single zone, you'll want to make sure you scry/excavate all motif leads for that zone before digging up another treasure chest. I did Deshaan the other day and out of six treasure maps I got the motif leads four times. It made for a lot of running around, but I was able to make decent gold for the motifs in my guild traders.

I doubt it has anything to do with people not wanting to go to a zone or another.

As far as I know and have experienced, those motifs only drop from chests obtained with treasure maps. Normal chests that spawn for everybody don't have the leads in them.

This means that whomever is "hunting" for these leads is dealing with RNG twice - the first time to get a treasure map to drop* within the loot, and the second for the leads to be inside the chest found with that map.

*Even if the maps are bought from guild stores, you - the buyer - are still dealing with RNG. Not the buyer's RNG, but the seller's. The buyer also have to be lucky to find the map they want in the store they are looking at. RNG is, after all, just another term for "luck".
