    Bears have been scratching their backs since Orsinium. Elks licking trees is a new one though.

    I can't believe someone is actually complaining about the natural sounds in a game. If you don't like it, turn it off.

    **Ahem**

    So this is a little late to the party but seeing as you asked so nicely;

    https://youtu.be/37Sl1W18xs4

    I was just roaming around on way to excavation site when I saw this Elk and remembered this thread. Enjoy!

    Edit [added as cannot edit later post]:

    I recall seeing a nature documentary where deer where shown licking or nibbling at trees and it was suggested that maybe they where trying to get vitamins from such action. I am also reminded of the various stories of 'drunk' moose! The moose in question was said to have eaten fruit from a tree that was toxic or fermented and this led to the apparent drunkenness - search the web and you will likely find photos of such incidents.

    Elk (antlered animals in general) don't so much 'lick trees' as they rub their antlers.

    "Elk will rub their antlers against trees, shrubs and the ground to impress cows or show dominance. Prior to the rut, this behavior is exhibited as bulls shed the drying velvet from their antlers."
    The problem with society these days is that no one drinks from the skulls of their enemies anymore.

    Elks - Horned demons from oblivion. Always taunting you to chase after them and aggro everything for a mile. Of course they don't carry gold, just a slab of meat. Pure evil.

    I see Zos has some priorities.

    Yes! I agree with what you are pointing out in general. I live near a deer park and not too far from forested areas and have seen similar behaviour in real life. My video clearly shows the animal in question NOT rubbing antlers but, apparently, feeding in some way - lick the tree is just an expression I suppose. Further to this, many Elk can be seen in game clearly rubbing antlers on a tree - I think I saw one rubbing against a rock too but was in a hurry and cannot confirm this. In game I just, directly before writing this, passed an elk rubbing antlers against a tree.

    Indeed! I've seen the bears rubbing against trees, great bears [white like polar bears] in groups of three looking at each other as if in some meeting and other animals in the wild fighting each other to the death. These things are **COUGH** real priorities players want in game [almost kept a straight face typing that]. These things do add a sort of realism that is kind of nice to see.

    I think the elk is raking the tree.

    edit: But I never seen a video of one doing that to a big tree.

    As someone who has hunted elk (and deer and various other game), it's not "licking trees". Jeez. Do none of you ever hear the elk calls in the game? Actually, the calls are done VERY well - they're exactly like "real life elk" (if with a bit less volume - let me tell you, an elk bull a few yards away from you can DEAFEN you....)

    Elk don't "lick trees". They rub against rough bark for various reasons: to get rid of the antler velvet (probably itches, but since elk don't speak English who knows for sure?); to mark territory; to produce sound that attracts females (along with the calls) - because elk have ONE imperative: mating, to produce more elk.

    People need to get out into the wild more....

    OK so Elk do not lick trees! I mentioned earlier that 'lick the tree is just an expression'. Having thought about it a little, I knew I had seen a documentary about deer or elk or similar that did show such animals eating bark so I did a quick search and found these;

    From the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation:

    https://www.rmef.org/elk-network/why-do-elk-eat-vomit/

    'Elk graze on grass, sedges and forbs in spring and summer. In the fall and winter, they will hit shrubs, tree bark, needles, and if they can get it, winter wheat.'

    [My emphasis]

    Also, this from alamy [ not showing image due to copy matters]:

    LONG address!

    And just for fun, the incredible drunken Elk:

    Article - edited to correct.

    _55239942_drunkenmoose.jpg

    Seems she gets out on the town [or in the wild] more than I do! :smiley:

    Who thought ESO would lead to such a wonderful, if brief, nature safari?

    EDITS: to correct link and some spell ink!
