Antiquities system - Leads Obscure

Let me get this straight.
There is no indication to where the leads may be, by any in-game direction?
I'm not saying that it is difficult because of this.
Don't get me wrong, its fine when it drops at random, when it drops. Its rather a pleasant surprise. But lets face it. Most of us are after the Mythic items sooner rather than a full scour over Tamriel's nooks and cranny's not even knowing where to look.

It seems as thought everyone just goes to either the excel floating around or alcast's guide. Which seems wrong to me, slightly cheating yourself of the Indiana Jones discovery I thought this system was going to be about.

Are we expected to just do all content Cadwells silver and gold ( delves & public dungeons) all over again with RNG on the drop without even knowing where to look????
I thought we were going to be treasure Hunters not Treasure stumblers.

I am seeing Guilds now pop up, that are just about sharing lead locations.
Which is all well and good for those people who want the information. Spoon fed from forums or guides, it should be from in-game doing solo content not relying on external out of game stimuli.
Is there no flavor text, NPC to hint at locations via dialogue, roughly drawn map to aid/guide the search, rumors or whispers? I feel like this is especially needed for the Mythic items, no?

You have the eye in the quickslot "tools" section. Use it in the displayed zone and it will show you the precise direction of the dig site.

Edit: my bad, didn't read. It's about the leads, not the dig sites (I'll leave it here in case people didn't know, though. I made my first six ranks the hard way...).

I think this is a case of MMO-itis hitting us again.

The idea of random drops when doing a repetitive action is very much in genre.

What I would have preferred to see (in this case, and in quests in general) is far more integration with the world, rather than the sense that this is a layer floating above it.

It would have been nice to tie it in to existing systems. As a single example of a way it might be done.
    1. The various museums and Guilds could have records of items relating to their sphere of influence. That would give you the names and expected properties.
    2. You could seek out information that already exists in texts relating to the item either through Eidetic Memory/Lorebooks (tie in another system and reward those who have already collected them) or searching in locations where it has either been reported before, or that contain archives.
    3. You could actively track the item across the landscape to find it. Completing other activities on the way (NPC interactions, research, digging through ruins). Again, reflect systems that are already implemented... if you have previously helped NPCs in that area they might be happier to pass on information... if it is a ruin you have already been to, then you might have a "memory" of where you've seen similar carvings/documents/displays... and so on.
    4. You finally find the item.

All of this would need planning, but it certainly would anchor it into the world.

Of course the "endgame is the game" crowd might bemoan such an approach, but if the items are not BIS then maybe they wouldn't mind too much.

FML - I had forgotten about the tool. Running around in dig areas for ages trying to find dig sites when I didn't need to.

I did a bit of research and it looks like pretty much all the mythic items I was interested in have at least one lead that comes from Imperial city or PVP in general. On the plus side that means I now don’t have to worry about looking for mythic items at all. I never enjoy PVP in any game this one is no exception.
I don’t understand why there aren’t a full set of leads in PVP and PVE, surely that would’ve been preferable as that way everyone is happy. I know friends in my guild that would rather be kicked in the crotch than do PVE, pretty much the same way I feel about PVP LOL
