I'm trying my first gold (legendary) lead. Scrying went fine. Excavation not so much.

What am I doing wrong... ? Looks like I've excavated the whole thing, haven't I ?

Also, how and why is a treasure "damaged" or "destroyed", and what to do to avoid it ? Looks completely random to me, I must have missed something here.

Thanks in advance for potential explanations :-)

Had this happen on a few purple excavations.

This has been happening to others as well, something to do with it not having the correct coordinates for the treasure making it think the treasure is still buried causing you to fail.

Hopefully they will do something about it.

With the hand brush you cannot damage the treasure but with the shovel you can.

You can dig one square down to the bottom or (depending on your level) dig one or two layers down with 9 squares. Both of these shovel actions can damage the treasure, indicated on the health bar in the center top of your screen. I dont know what happens if you damage the treasure too much but I assume you destroy it and cannot recover it.

I can answer the last part of your paragraph : if you damage the treasure too much the excavating simply stops.
You don't lose your lead nor your scrying though : you just have to use the eye again and excavate again at the new digging site it shows you.

Is this confirmed even for gold items?

Yes. I haven't managed to successfully excavate a single gold item so far : I always run out of time or damage the item. But I can try as often as I want, over and over, without having to find a new lead nor having to scry again. Number of attempts seems unlimited.
