Question about leads and how to find them

I understand leads drop from chests or bosses; and I know where which leads drop; but are they completely random?

For example if I want to collect a specific motif - are the leads for them random in the region where they drop? Or can I somehow increase my chances to get these specific leads?

Not sure tbh but harvesting nodes also drop the tips.

Yep, that happened to me last night while doing a blacksmithing survey in Rivenspire-- got a lead on something or other.

I assume drops are rng tough (which lead out of that regions pool you get)

They are not random. Most or at least many can only be found from one specific source. Some have two or even more sources but not every lead can be found from every type of source.

If you're looking for the Ancestral motifs, the leads can be found from treasure maps in that specific zone and afaik no other source.

treasure maps or also the random treasure chests? guess i have to buy me some treasure maps...

Killed a name mob and got dropped a lead for the snow prince throne or some such right before servers went down.

Seems to be rather random

I found this link quite useful. teso.mmorpg-life.com/antiquities-leads-locations-hidden-entry-relics I decided to look it up after finding a gold furnishing lead in "Village of the lost" Public dungeon, in Cold Harbour. It was on one of the Daedra in a trash mob.

I got a couple of Golds today, one from a backpack in Moonlit Cove in Southern Elsweyr, one from a dragon in Northern Elsweyr.

Let's hope they don't "fix" the droprate with this maintenance then because I also picked a gold one up out of a 3-month-old Laundered goods crate in my thief's inventory this morning too. Two gold leads in the hour before the server went down again seems excessive... not that I'm complaining. Hopefully the server doesn't do an hour rollback
