Maintenance for the week of December 16:
• PC/Mac: No maintenance – December 16
• NA megaservers for patch maintenance – December 17, 4:00AM EST (9:00 UTC) - 12:00PM EST (17:00 UTC)
• EU megaservers for patch maintenance – December 17, 9:00 UTC (4:00AM EST) - 17:00 UTC (12:00PM EST)

Honesty?

"Hi everyone,

We discovered an issue once we opened the PC NA/EU megaservers after Update 26 maintenance, and have locked the servers to investigate. We'll let you know when we have an ETA for re-opening. Thanks for your patience."

Why can't you as in Zenimax Media try to be honest and forthcoming for once. You discovered an "issue"... What issue? Just tell us what the problem is*, that would at least make me less annoyed with your mistakes.

*=I did find out the problem from browsing the forum, but that shouldn't be necessary. Hey maybe the rumor of Skyrim accessible for all is just one of the problems with this update.

Media, other game companies social media teams, other game companies in general, people who use exploits, and people who panic easily, just to name a few, are some of the many groups of people who will pounce if they get too specific with what the issue is.

Well i don't think they have discovered it, server went offline after the "we can go skyrim without greymoor" posts appearing on the forum. It wouldn't be go online like this if they have discovered it in the first place. Truth is, it's not even something minor that needs to be "discovered" through tedious checks. I login to my character and saw the wayshrine was open for me and then just went to solitude to see what they have done with the place :D

Pretty sure the main issue is with Greymoor/Skyrim being available to everyone, even people who didn't buy it yet.

Believe it, or not (and I know some people, on here, choose not to) this is a consumer product, pretty much like any other, that they would prefer not to give away for free, if at all possible.

Of course there will be other bugs, as well (this is ESO!), but still.

ZOS is just VERY BAD at expectation management.

If they just reserve a full day for maintance and it's already done in 12 hours everybody is happy.
If they just reserve 3 hours for mainanance and it's only done in 12 hours everybody is angry.

    Simple as that.

Seems pretty honest to me. "We" are part of the community as well. I guess you'd be ok with them just giving away stuff you had to buy to access? What's that you say, you'd want everyone to have to do what you did to gain access? [Edited for Bait]

The mentality that companies are not responsible or accountable to their customers originates from companies that habitually hose over their customers. It's mystifying that some people can accept that kind of assertion from a corporation.

This was a smart plan. To distribute players.. so some will start playing earlier and so they will quit earlier, or at least login system won't be at peak pressure. Now you may imagine what pressure on server will be, when both those who wanted to login now will combine with players, who are now returning from work in Europe.

In all honesty it is to be expected.

Except that they gave us an explanation? Sorry, did you expect them to list every possible exploit they fix so that you can try to use them later to see if they really fixed them? This is exactly why they, and by they I mean game developers in general, not ZoS, don't list what the exploits are, and why posts that list how to do them on a game's forum can get a player banned. In this case, we know what it is, unauthorized access to new content. We also know that they took the servers down because of it, because they made a thread about it. So what else is it you're expecting, a spreadsheet of all the code they're going through looking where someone had a typo?

I completely disagree, especially given ZOS’s track record on transparency. They have our money, some monthly, and we deserve to know what we’ve paid for and how well they fulfill their part of the bargain. Not a perfect correlation, but you pay your Doctor to keep you well and informed. If all you get is “well, you’re results came back and you’re generally doing okay except a few issues. Well, see you next visit, I have another patient!” then you’re not getting you’re money’s worth.

Hopefully this is quick, but I’d have no problem letting everyone have access while they figure the issue out and how to properly fix it and then do a well planned, low impact server update. They’d just need to make it clear that your access is very temporary. Sort of a free access ‘weekend’. It would even support additional sales - if Greymoor is worth it. Instead EVERYONE is paying the price, again, for ZOS not being ready for prime time. May be more to the issue, but how do you miss an unintended deployment of a wide open rollout of paid content? Improper testing is the answer to my question.

Nothing in the first post I quoted would lead anyone to believe anything even remotely similar to what you're claiming here. To wit:

    1. "The mentality that companies are not responsible or accountable to their customers originates from companies that habitually hose over their customers". What part of putting a red banner on the top of the forum pages means that they aren't being responsible, or accountable?
    2. "It's mystifying that some people can accept that kind of assertion from a corporation". Which assertion is that? You mean "Something is broken, and we are taking down the servers to fix it" is somehow a bad thing to post?

How much of that is something you paid for, or were promised? Which edition of the game came with these promises, because my edition certainly didn't. I find it more than a bit ironic that you're mystified that players can accept communication on an issue with the game? So no, this isn't "I want what I paid for", it's "I want what I want right now, and I'm going to throw fits on the forums until I get it".

Interesting that you found the issue after searching the forum, but failed to mention it in your post. Little more openness would be nice.

Another aspect of a lack of transparency issue I’ve considered: I bet ZOS has often rolled out updates, patches, etc. in which they know there are still (even new) broken things and do not proactively inform their paying customers. We then have to discover, deal with, in some case stress over, frustrating problems which ZOS knew existed but did not inform us. We are unpaid beta testers with blinders on.

Not that they are alone in this practice, but being up front about these issues could reduce customer frustration and display some transparency. Instead there are the all too infrequent, delayed, grudging acknowledgement of a few issues, and otherwise crickets. We are not viewed as customers, but merely income. I don’t blame ZOS employees, who are likely underpaid and short staffed. This is a Management/Culture problem, IMO, which is tolerated, even supported by people simply accepting the status quo. Some people even quickly come to the defense of these companies, which are not operating in their own best interests.

Bottom line is that consumers, in general and in all markets, have been accepting reworks as part of product or service. In fact, marketing has been using this strategy to anticipate releases at the cost of Recall. After all, a recall is cheaper than a zero-quality-defect program and strategy (it takes time and resource), just using transparency as generic approach and words.

This is an issue of our generation, since what is the cascade effect? are we now accepting recalls of food or basic situation due to lack of management? As now, an ESO recall due to a missing simple configuration after so long planning to release?

Unfortunately, this shows where the game is going. And soon, it will be competing with Amazon´s MMO New World.

ESO is great and hope devs and management get all lessons learnt and keep the game live and well.
