Hello there, everyone, and congratulations! We're less than a week away to Greymoor release!
Now, I'm sure a lot of you are chomping at the bit to play Greymoor, especially since some of us may be fresh out of a job as a result of COVID. So please allow me to give you some advice.
First, I know that some other ESO veterans will tell you that chapter releases almost always have at least one or two hitches, even during the best of times (e.g. Summerset and it's issues with Abyssal Geysers on launch day). As you can tell by our current state of the world, we are far from the best of times. As ZOS has stated multiple times, this will be the first-ever remote launch of a major content update. I am sure that the devs for World of Warcraft, TERA, and every other MMO out there that is still relevant are going to be watching how the patch maintenance next week goes and will be taking notes, specifically on if ZOS can pull off a release of an expansion (and solve any major issues that can only be detected on live) without sending anyone to the datacenter/office to fix the issues. If ZOS pulls it off, you can expect that other development teams will push out major content updates remotely, and will continue to do remote updates until the day comes when we can relegate COVID to the dustbin of history.
Second, if you were planning to play on patch day...here's a piece of advice...DON'T PLAN ON IT! As stated above, every chapter release has had one or two hitches that come with it (some even required an emergency maintenance). This is not an ordinary chapter release. There will likely be some hiccups with this remote launch, and possibly a few bugs that break the game so bad that it requires emergency maintenance after the patch maintenance. And again, ZOS is going to do everything in its power to not send anyone to the datacenter/office in an effort to keep themselves safe, unless there is no other option but to send people to the office. Expect bugs, expect hitches on release day, and plan on catching up on housework for the entire launch day.
Finally, it is expected that Western Skyrim will be a major lag zone for the next few weeks. If your system can't handle it, consider playing in other zones until things calm down a bit.
That is all. I look forward to seeing you all next week! Possibly in Western Skyrim, possibly here on the forums in the so-called "Natch Potes" thread, but regardless of where, I hope you're just as excited as I am.
If you can't handle the heat...stay out of the kitchen!
