Why can’t we preview dyes?

It seems odd we can preview locked weapon and armor styles but we can’t preview the locked dyes. Some of these dyes require a lot of work and it would be nice to be able to preview them to see if I actually want to work towards it.

No dye looks like the swatch when applied, and often they look different per material or gear piece too. Having a preview would be nice, but also very unreliable.

Well I’d imagine the preview you’d be able to put the dye on armor to see its appearance as well.

How would it be unreliable? The whole point of the preview is so you can see what it'll look like on your armor. That is 100% reliable, as you will see exactly what the end result will be. :#

you can look at all the dyes here on different materials

dyes looks differ depending on the material and for what material they are intended to (for example metal colors have metal shine etc.)

Until you swap out a piece or get a new motif. So yes, it reliable for one moment in time, I agree.

I agree a preview would be really helpful. At the moment I just use whatever dyes I happen to get, but on several occasions I've been surprised by how it actually looks - both ones I didn't expect to like and do and ones I expected to use a lot and then rarely choose. If I could preview them I might actually go out of my way to do achievements to unlock them.

If it worked like the outfit preview, where you can apply it and see how it looks on your character and just can't confirm the change it would overcome that problem. You'd be able to see how the dye works in the dye slot you're thinking of putting it in, and if you wanted to go between different dye stations to check out different lighting.

Yes, that would work. While we're at it, I'd also like them to add a dynamic light source to the outfit table.

I don't even know how to explain how little sense that makes. You go to the outfit station. You preview what a motif looks like using a locked dye. See if you wanna use it or not, go earn the dye or not, etc. What does earning a new motif have to do with that? You can already preview all locked styles. If you could preview locked dyes like motifs, you could literally preview anything you wanted. You want to be able to preview a locked dye on all future motifs that aren't even released yet that you may one day be able to earn...? What does swapping out a piece have to do with anything in regards to a dye you aren't using??? Help

No mention of the outfit station; you can preview weapon and armour styles in the collection menu too.

I was providing my opinion from the information provided in the opening post.

I agreed with this one further up the thread before your response because it did mention the outfit station as being the solution.

 it's wet where I am. Wet and windy. :disappointed:

Totally agree if it was implemented at the outfit station, and we could have a dynamic/adjustable light source too.

Agreed! It was a major downer for me the first time I tried to look at some of the locked dyes (a good blue and a deep black IIRC) and couldn't! Yes, eso-fashion's dye pages are a help, but seeing colors on one's gear is much better.

And double yes on the light source! I have an outfit station outdoors in the Villa, because it's always "daylight" even if not perfect daylight, but at least you get a better look than the indoors ones. The only other one I use regularly is the one in Ebonheart IF it's daytime, as that one's outdoors.

totally agree. The amount if dyes I grinded for thinking they'd be a certain color but weren't (including the black market mogul achievement dye, ayleid gold, etc) is too high

I don't know how many dyes I've put the effort to unlock, only to end up not using them at all. Yes we need to be able to preview.

If you're on PC all dyes are unlocked on PTS.

Log in to PTS, pick your favorite gear piece, go to the outfit table, and be as wildly unrestrained as possible with your advanced dye techniques.

OP probably meant it à la Guild Wars 2, where you can "apply"' any dye to any piece of equipment or costume to preview what it would actually look like on it. You can't validate that look if you don't own the dye, but you can still test it in real condition on your real equipment. On the other hand, ESO merely tells you the dye exists, with no way to test it. GW2 also includes a "find at the trade house" link if you don't own it, so you can insta-find it and see how much it would cost to unlock it (dyes are commodities traded between players, dropped in the world and whatnot).

GW2 is like 4 years older than ESO, and its interface is still alot more refined and exhaustive. But then, every game by Bethesda / Zenimax suffers from the same fate of ill-concieved interfaces.

I still don't understand how they could mess things up this much. It's hardly possible to find a decent brown in this game, for instance. Most of the time it looks redish, or it's brown but shines waaaaaay too much...

The way I see it, adding a dye to something doesn't replace the colour channel, it adds to it, giving us the murky results we all know. Which is probably the worst way possible to handle dyes in a game.

With browns, I've found the trick is to aim for those weird colors down at the bottom that you get for (I think) crafting achieves. They were added sort of recently. They look blue/grey/red in the swatch but often come out brown...

Pssh, who needs to preview locked colors when the swatches are so reliable? Just work really hard to unlock a color... that rare blue may be just the pink you've been looking for. I'm looking at you, Transliminal Violet, aka Shimmery-ne Gold.

(This last paragraph was sarcasm; no need to revisit the earlier trainwreck.)
