Clockwork City, just so unique looking unlike the usual elven forest tropes you always get in MMOs

So I got Hero of Murkmire yesterday, after an awesome community group kicked the crap out of Walk-like-Thunder. I gotta say, I surprisingly enjoyed the zone. I'm not normally one for swamp zones but this zone was cool. The music was great, as always, and I like how the different plants could be disarmed. Of course the ending areas of the story quest were jaw dropping too.

So, what zones pleasantly surprised you?

I also enjoyed Murkmire a lot more than I thought i would, first DLC I finished the quest line in since Thieves Guold.

Summerset is a personal favourite of mine

The DLC zones have been by far the most enjoyable for me.

Northern Elsweyr has such a contrast through the zone and it was a joy to play and to look at. Visually there is a lot to take in and it never feels repetitive. It’s easily #1

Vvardenfell has some crazy contrast as well from Vivec city, jungle wetlands, a raging volcano, small islands and well written quests overall. I enjoyed it overall but put it #2 on my list.

Wrothgar grew on me quickly and I really enjoyed the zone as well. I’ve still got all side quests to do there to fill in more of the zone but the story captivated me as well as the dynamics of all the tribes in the zone itself. I’ve still got more to see but I will go back.

Haven’t played any other DLC zones but for regular game zones the only one that really grabbed me so far was Eastmarch. I’ve only played AD and EP quest lines so far. I’m just moving into Stormhaven now on DC. I’ve actually found the little starter islands on each to be fun and each one is unique in its overall look and feel even if the questing is similar.

Looking forward to getting back to the DLC zones after Cadwell’s gold to see what else the game has to offer.

    I have 2.

1 clockwork city. I thought the mystery of where the fabricants came from was just really intriguing and gave the whole zone a spooky surreal vibe I've only seen in single player games.

2 cyrodiil. It's the only zone you can just wander without constantly running into NPCs saying idiotic things about quests you don't even remember doing. Of course, sheogorath is a bit of a sore thumb.

I really enjoy how nearly every zone has a more or less unique feel. Sure, some are similar to others, especially the ones which are in the same province. But I love the diversity in the environs from province to province.

As for Cyrodiil, one night I was in Cyrodiil working on skyshards and delves, and it happened to be nighttime in Tamriel. I was crunching through the snow in northern Cyrodiil listening to the hoot owls with headphones on, and it was just so incredibly immersive and awesome. :)
I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than me!

My experience is so weird really. When I started playing (June of 2018) I had wildblue satellite for connection - the only thing available besides dialup at the time!

I had a very hard time just questing (which is my normal thing to do in TES games) - the combat was nearly impossible with my ping (generally about 2 full seconds if not more), so things like the quest "mini bosses" were out of the realm of the possible for me (it took me forever to get past the Ancient Clannfear in Daughter of Giants - my first character, a Dunmer NB, was level 20 before she managed to get past it) - because high satellite ping due to a crap provider isn't conducive to killing 1 gem anything....

I've had a better satellite provider for nearly a year now, and questing is actually possible. I finished the MQ on my two 50s (CP 375, CP 274 appx - not in game, don't remember). And then I started my second account 50 - Redguard warden - on Cadwell's Silver. By the time I finished it, I was awed - by the complexity of the quests, the zones themselves, the tightly-knit plotting. The AD questline is a gem, and I'm SO glad I finally got to play it (including killing the quest bosses without too many issues!) - now I'm hoping that better satellite will allow my AD characters to actually play their own quest line.

I actually hadn't spent a lot of time in the AD zones until running Silver, but wow, they are truly gorgeous. Then again, I love Alik'r and Bangkorai too, as well as Grahtwood and Elsweyr. Those are my favorites.

Auridon's got a few spots that I love coming back to for relaxation. Isle of Contemplation and the little area where two rivers joins right south of Beacon Falls. Raz left a memorial there for someone. It's the little things.

Vvardenfell arguably has some of the best quests in the game. I was just wrapping up some of the quests in Vos and I love the Telvanni architecture - the mushrooms and black stone throughout.

I have just finished another run through of north and south Elsweyr, i really enjoy the storylines there.

Clockwork City was good but after id explored some of it, i spent the rest of my time there wanting to give sotha sil a monumental kick up the backside, and yell at him to fix up this rundown mess he was making his people live in.

Vvardenfell, tooo many closed doors but mostly really enjoyed playing thru it first time.
Wrothgar, that's how a DLC should be. But I kind of got burnout from Orsinum events, too bad.

Of base game zones, Rivenspire and Bangkorai. Maybe doing DC last helped.

I really liked Wrothgar, but even before playing it I had a feeling that I would enjoy it because of the Orc and snow theme of the zone. It did not dissapoint.

When it's really coming down to pleasantly surprised I have to say Shadowfen. I am not a fan of swamp zones and argonians but the main story and even most of the sidequests were pretty good.

    Southern Elsweyr.

I wasn’t really expecting much, but I’ve enjoyed playing through and I like the attention to detail. Unusual side quests, like the grapple hook quest with achievement, were a nice touch (more of this kind of stuff please, ZoS).

As a result, I have spent far longer mooching around this zone than I ever thought I would.

I really liked Murkmire. A lot of detail which slows me down and forces me to just check everything out. SOmetimes I just break out a fishing pole and fish along the ocean there. It reminds of wade fishing out in the bay here in South Texas haha!

Vvardenfell- Another really well done zone. I liked it so much, I bought a house there. Dunmer tax the hell out of this old druid but I like my bug house so I'm staying.

Wrothgar- I'm not a big snow fan but I always liked this zone and it's main quest line.

Lastly, I'm at work and can't remember the name but I think it's Hew's Bane and Abbahs Landing. It has that Mediterranean feel IMO. What I really like is the large ships in the harbor in the town. It makes it feel grand and epic. I wish it had a bit more NPCs on the docks to make it feel more alive but it's cool.

I liked Murkmire - traversing through the swamp feels like an adventure, even when you're not really doing anything, as there is always this air of 'danger' of being in such a treacherous and mysterious place.

    Elsweyr, more so Southern.
I was expecting very little out of Elsweyr, expected it to be a cheap cash grab with the dragons and I was expecting it to be on the level of Murkmire and to me, Murkmire was extremely slow and depressing, so I avoid it.

Elsweyr turned out far better then I expected and the end quest that connected both Zones was super fun.
In truth not many zones where I slow down and pay attention to the quest's story.
I did with Elsweyr in a lot of places.
Was it my favorite zone? Nah, but it is the one that surprised me the most.
    Have a list of toons
    The Big 3
Rotiq - DK Tank Dungeons and Trials all day long
Narshan - MagNB Grand Master Crafter, Quester, Assassin to the stars
Irros - MagSorc - PvP also known as "That dead guy over there"
    Alts that are...well...alive
    Silavor - MagPlar
    Nezkuz - StamSorc/Wolf
    Kentho - DK Healer/Vampire
    Hirl - NecroTank wip
    Umatal - DK wip

Once I logged in right after the maintenance. I was alone in Vivec crafting area. Just me there! Damn, what a beautiful place is empty Vivec... It lasted less than a minute, but I was really impressed.

This is the feeling you get when you play during the night. No one to pick every single node before you get there, no one to rush through the delve/quest you're working through, skip everything and leave all the mobs running back like fools around you, no one to kill that quest boss before you get there and skip YOUR quest forward even though you didn't even land a single blow on it (this is why when I see people near quest objectives I'm heading to, I hang back and let them leave before I move forward). Everything feels better when there's no people around, when it comes to overland at least.

Back on topic.... Wrothgar. I guess. Possibly because that's one of the few zones I have 100% completed so far. Can't comment on the most "recent" areas since tbh, I have yet to run quests since CWC came out

Finally running through Cadwell’s gold so in the first few zones it’s stacked with new players zipping all over the place. I try to hang back and let them do their thing so they can learn especially on bosses where I will throw down a single DOT and heal them when they struggle instead of melting the boss in 3 seconds. You still have to deal with the players speed running on new toons though. Where do they get the stamina pool to run like that though. At level 4 I could barely sprint 200 meters before my player was gassed!

As for exploring at night it really is relaxing in some zones but you can’t do many world bosses in DLC zones. I find that’s a good time to solo public dungeons though lately it amounts to spending 2 hours grinding Nchuleftingth for those last fragment of the Dwarven pet only to get 3 pieces of what I already have. During prime hours I’m usually competing with a max CP who sprints from spawn to spawn insta killing everything before I can land a single hit. The last two times with their Dwarven pet in tow. Frustrating.

All zones dlc zones surprised me in a way. Even at launch, the base game. It's mainly the architecture and the details and attention to culture of each race (music, art, npc) that make the zones so real. Its like going to Italy and seeing the people talking with their hands and everything that is characteristic from there.

Mountains and magic you see in many games but its the culture what makes ESO so immersive. I expect pretty landscape but what surprises me makes me smile is that guar sleeping, the khajiit that locked a doggy, the bard songs, that weird argonian instrument and so on. Its full of that stuff in all the zones.

But if I have to choose one ... Clockwork City for sure. The automatons and the astronomer quest with all the clues to Sotha Sil past. I wasn't expecting this zone to be beautiful at all, yet it is!

    • Murkmire gave me strong Tomb Raider feelings, which was very good.
    • Summerset struck me as very beautiful when I first explored it.
    • Even though the stitches in Northern Elsweyr are kinda cool, I dont really like the dusty tone in tone. Rimmen is nice though.

Even though I want to hold of my greymoor purchase because my endgame (PvP) is buggy, laggy and broken as hell, I assume that I cannot withhold myself from wanting to play it. And I hope it gives me strong Skyrim nostalgia with a plus.

Imperial City. I love the aesthetics of that place, as well as Coldharbour. Some of my fondest memories have also come from IC, so it will always be one of my favourite zones.
While we're at it, please add new sets to IC ZOS, and/or revamp some of the older ones. Shieldbreaker is quite nice now, but Black Rose could be worth taking a look at, as well as Harbinger. Well, basically most of them.
