Agra Crun before 'Awaken the Past'

Has anyone ever tried to find the Agra Crun - the blood shield - before being given the quest? I remember seeing it with my main char which has already done it in this Bonerock Cavern. Obviously, I couldn't interact with it, so I went to the cave and tried to pick it up with other characters - it was not there, even though UESP claims it is.
"The Agra Crun can also be found in Bonerock Cavern, near the end, in a small northern chamber near the totem. There is an interaction option, but probably because the Agra Crun has already been placed in the museum, the interaction does nothing."

I believed I could pick the shield and do the quest differently...
