Crashing while using Discord

Any ideas why my husband's ESO would crash a ton but only while we are on Discord? He works in another state so we started playing so we can still connect across the distance and its just the 2 of us in Discord but he will crash every 5 min. No problems if he's playing by himself without Discord on. We have turned the overlay off and the hardware acceleration in Discord but ESO still crashes.

I'm sorry you and your husband are having these issues. I don't really see how Discord could interfere with ESO, as they are not mutually exclusive to one another.

Is there a crash report or error code that appears when the unexpected crash happens? If not, please describe what happens... does the screen go black for a second, then show the desktop? Does it put him back to the login screen? Does it simply close and show the desktop with no crash report?

In the meantime, I think your husband can still use the in-browser version of discord at: https://www.discordapp.com/

One extra suggestion I have, is that your husband can try switching the display-mode in ESO's video options. Using the in-game menu, select options, video, then at the top, change the Display Mode drop-down to Windowed (Fullscreen). If Discord was having problems displaying or running its overlay, this should fix that issue.

Thanks for the suggestions!

He says he doesn't get any error codes and no crash reports. It dumps him back out to the log in screen.

We hadn't thought about the in browser version. We will give that a try. I think he's already running in the Windowed (Fullscreen) but I will double check.

He tried so much stuff because we at first thought it was his graphics, even running it at the lowest setting and it looking terrible he would crash until we figured out that Discord had something to do with it. Last time we played we just called each other on the phone, plugged our phones in, and used speaker phone and we played for hours with no problems on high graphics. Be nice if the browser version works out though would also be nice to figure out why we can't run as normal.

Another thing you may want to look at is disabling Discord's game overlay. User Settings -> App Settings -> Overlay.
It's completely pointless and only hinders the client even more. In general I turn off any overlays, such as the Windows 10 Xbox thing as well.

Oh yes we have turned off all overlays that we could find, Discord, Nividia, etc but still crashes. We really thought that was the solution we needed which is why its become so confusing/frustrating.

Sorry I missed that part in the OP! People have claimed that using a controller while gaming and with Discord open would cause their games to crash. Obviously not applicable if you're not using a controller. Does Discord itself crash also, or is it just the ESO client?

No controller and its just ESO. We can continue to talk while he cusses at being logged out every 5 min lol

Hah, can't say I blame him for all the cussing. I honestly don't know if this will fix anything, but you could always give the Public Test Build of Discord a try. Sometimes test builds have fixes for issues that the "stable" builds have. I use it myself and haven't noticed any problems. Certainly worth a shot in any case!

Well we tried both the PTB and the browser version and game still crashes. He says it says "an error has occurred". So I guess for now we are back to playing on speaker phone unless an admin or someone else has any ideas!

He did put in a ticket like a week or so ago, back before we figured out it was Discord causing the crash, and he sent in info they wanted and has never heard back.

Another option is that if he has a device or a laptop that can run discord in which he can plug in his headset, and use that instead of running discord and the game on the same computer.

Well....duh I feel stupid haha. That is a really good point. He does have his work laptop. I just passed it on and we are gonna do that.

Likewise, you could install the Discord app for the phone. It's available on both Android and iOS. It would also be a lot easier to handle than a laptop if your husband wanted to make dinner or walk outside. It shares most of, if not all the basic functions of the desktop program. Sorry that the in-browser solution didn't work.
