29 Apr: Swapping Character is taking such a long time

I have a high spec PC,my internet ping is fine but over the last 6 hours since I logged on from my non-ESO sleep period, when I want to change characters the load screen is just stuck on "requesting character load"
Added: I am a slow typer so it has now been over 5 minutes in this "logging In" screen.
When I close the window manually and restart ESO through the launcher then almost always I get a "could not communicate with the server" message or an "error has occurred" and after that intermittently I get "account is already logged on".
I am located in Europe (Austria) and logging in to NA ESO.
I checked my ping and internet connection is fine at least for YouTube and browsing so I wonder if there may be a problem at the ZOS server side. I am really not wanting to point fingers and call out ZOS so does anyone else have something similar going on when the switch characters?
The only way out of this for me is to close the game window and relog from scratch.

✭Ridiculous character loading times has been an issue for a long time. When I do my writs, 3/4 of the time it takes is just getting in and out of the game. It's stupid.1
