Western Skyrim features the holds of Haafingar, Hjaalmarch, and Karthald
    Hmm....
    What is a "Karthald"?

Too late to ask, but, yeah... so tired of locked and barred buildings.

I assume one of the holds must have been renamed, since Hogondar Hammerhurl mentions there being nine holds in City of Ash 2.

There's no mention of it anywhere as far as I know in the lore, though. >.>

    Karthald.

Well, we do know of several places with 'Karth' in the name, presumably after the Karth river (flows from Markarth to Solitude).

    Karthspire
    Karthwasten

Perhaps Karthald "hold" is part of The Reach, maybe declared a hold by Reachmen? or maybe The Reach is currently in turmoil and split and the northern part is "Karthald" right now?

Seriously though, you're probably spot on. Most of The Reach is officially independent during this time period and is run by the Despot of Markarth, so Karthald is probably a part of the Reach that remains under the jurisdiction of Western Skyrim.

Yeah. The Reach has a tumultuous past, and I'm not sure when it was first established as one of the holds (was it at Old Hroldan?)... but there were always 9 afaik, so it appears Karthald is filling that role at this time. Which territory it occupies, we'll see. It might be in parts of 4th era Haafingar, Hjaalmarch or even Whiterun as well.

I wonder what that means for Falkreath, though. It has been part of "Colovia" at least twice IIRC, including the later parts of the interregnum. Did the Nords declare a new 9th hold during that time or wing it with 8?
Alandrol Sul: He's making another Numidium?!?
Vivec: Worse, buddy. They're buying it.

The Thalmor hate the number "9", so if they have any say in the matter during this Era...
