Shock same as Lightning?

I kn ow there are no shock staves, just lightning (and inferno and frost). So...is shock the same as lightning? I see various web sites recommend shock for a mag build, and I don't think I understand what the difference is between shock and lightning, if any, and why one would put a shock enchantment on a lightning stave? Or would you not do that?
Anyone who can clear up the confusion: thank you in advance.

"Shock" and "Lightning" are interchangeable terms when it comes to ESO.

    Yep.
Also, frost staves and ice staves are the same thing.

In fact, all three destro staves have nicknames/a couple ways to refer to damage. Partial quote from UESP wiki:

Each staff has an elemental type associated with it:
    an Inferno Staff will only deal fire damage;
    an Ice Staff will only deal frost damage;
a Lightning Staff will only deal shock damage.

It should be Shock comes from the Staff or Armor where Lightening is called down from the Sky, like Lightening Flood.

Problem is, ZOS mixes them up.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

It’s annoying but ESO has done a poor job at tooltips. Many have random periods, commas, or base skill descriptions that slightly differ from how morphs are described.

    Interchangeable damage types:

    - Fire and Flame
    - Shock and Lightning
    - Ice and Frost
    - Bleed and Physical

Pretty sure that’s all of them.

That's not true, all bleed is physical but not all physical is bleed.

Physical Damage and Bleed Damage both deal “Physical Damage” right?

The only difference was that Bleeds used to cut through resistances until ZOS homogenized the Damage type. So more or less Physical and Bleed is the same thing.

There’s maybe 1-2 sets (which are weak) that only focus on bleeds.

While we could argue that argument as well, even assuming it is true, the difference is that in this game your other examples, are the same thing. Not more or less.

Targets “bleed” for X Physical Damage.

Bleeds used to specifically ignore resistances but that is no longer the case. It works exactly like Physical Damage now and deals...... well, Physical Damage.

So to avoid overcomplicating things for no reason:
    **Bleed Damage = Physical Damage

Everything that counts as “Bleed” Physical Damage:
    • Lacerate (DW Ult)
    • Twin Slashes (DW active)
    • Carve (2H active morph)
    • Twin Blade and Blunt (DW Axe passive)
    • Heavy Weapons (2H Battleaxe passive)
    • Werewolf Beserker Light Attack DoT (Ult)
    • Pillar of Nirn (set)
    • Savage Werewolf (set)
    • Twin Sisters (set)
    • Aegis Caller (set)

Lastly, the Dro’zakar’s Claws set increases your Weapon Damage against a target for however many of these (bleeds) are active on a target. The only exception is that it may not work with Aegis Caller (I haven’t tested).

Besides Dro’zakar’s Claws, there is nothing anymore which distinguishes bleeds from other Physical Damage abilities/sets. The same way nothing distinguishes Fire from Flame, Lightning from Shock, or Ice from Frost when they are used interchangeably in tooltips.

Hope that clears things up :)

Shock seems usually referenced in glyphs, and maybe some armor effects. Lightning is usually for staves and maybe some abilities and also armor effects.
I agree the game should better distinguish these things. Where things become shocked, concussed, set off balance; well it gets hairy trying to explain all that.

Flame is the enchant, Inferno is the stave type. I suppose you could also call that a fire stick and generally everyone would know what you’re talking about. It’s side effect is of course burning, and there’s some nifty rules that apply.

Frost is the enchant, Ice is the stave type. Chilled is the status effect, that also causes minor maim, a named de-buff.
