Hey guys,

I hear proton support is quite good for ESO, so I'm simply wondering if it's at all possible to transfer my original account to a Steam one, or would I need to purchase a new one?

Thanks!

Yes, you can but you need to buy a new account in Steam. Then join your original account to Steam. That does the trick.

Ah, so it's not possible to just convert your current account, you actually need to re-purchase ESO and all of the DLC that you own? :/

@Alucardo No need to buy any DLC, just the base game works. Your DLCs will remain. But if you want, you can buy a version with any missing chapter. For e.g. if you buy the upcoming GreyMoor version on Steam, you will get the Chapter added to your base account like a normal upgrade.

Why would you ever want to play ESO on Steam if you already have the option not to do so? It's the same game, but with more downtime for some unknown reason.

A while ago I was dual booting so it wasn't an issue. However, I no longer have Windows, so really Proton is my best option.

and without the middle man. Why deal with a middle man when it can be avoided.

Let's not forget all the downtime Steam has had. Long periods of downtime when everyone else could play. While it has not been bad for a while I think they have still had some issues.

Most likely you do need to repurchase, but I'm not sure if you really need to buy your DLC again. I did it the other way round and moved from Steam to, well, without Steam. I only bought the base game. All the things I bought on Steam (DLC, ESO+) are still active in the non-Steam version. I would expect things to be the same if you go the other way. Make sure you use the same email address / account.

    Yep, you’re right, @joerginger.

OP just needs to purchase another copy of the base game.

I’m another player that recommends avoiding Steam at all costs, however.

OP is using Linux. Linux on steam seems to be less of an issue than through windows. I had huge issues using steam with windows, so I bought a copy of the game on sale through the ESO store, and now don't use steam. I have several friends who are on various flavors of Linux, and they don't have any issue using steam/Proton.

Thanks for the replies and answers! Yes, I'm aware the steam version isn't as reliable as the official one, but as Sylvermynx pointed out I'm using Linux, so Steam is my best option.

    Hello....

I play eso on linux and i have never owned a steam version. I have the stand alone version.

You can get it running with proton if you want but running proton outside of steam is more complicated than just running ESO with WINE.

anyways let me know... first thing is first, im not a super linux pro so i do have my limits but I am pretty good. I've gotten some games running when nobody else has like Ring runner and lichdom for example.

I am most familiar with ubuntu based distro's and i use linux mint in particular.

What have you tried so far and what is not working?

I haven't actually tried anything as of yet. Generally I don't mind using Wine for small non-critical applications, but because Proton has a lot of gaming optimizations under the hood, I'd prefer to use that in this instance. According to protodb [https://www.protondb.com/app/306130] it runs very well.
Truth be told, if the choice is use Wine or buy a new copy of ESO, I'll just go without. It's no problem.

I rebought the game using steam because I wanted a steam version. I had the option to link my own elder scrolls account instead of making a new one so I decided to do that so yes it can be done. so yes it can be done you can in fact link your Eso account but you do have to rebuy the game through steam to do this though.

There is no performance to be gained by using proton over WINE for eso. Proton just uses wine secretly anyways lol.

yes proton will be fine. As an experiment you could also run it with WINE, just keep the game files outside the wine/proton containers. See for yourself if there is a noticeable performance change on your system.

If you open up the eso account page and go to the connected accounts you can connect your steam account.

I am not currently using linux mint but it is a very good distro. I am partial to manjaro but feel free to use what suits you. Just if you use manjaro avoid the realtime kernels and upgrade the repos to unstable branch... (which is like being live with arch because the manjaro stable branch tests and applies fixes before moving things to stable)

I use steam and i have no issues with it. If you go into steam you want to go into settings and activate steam play before trying to install eso. Once you do it you will need to restart steam. then install eso. first time the launcher launches it will go o far and quit. after it quits launch it again and all is well.
I simply must protest. There are no Penguin avatars for me to use in the forums.

    BTW, I use arch too

Did they change it so you didn't have to buy the steam version of the game to link a steam account?

Don't do it. Lot of problems with Steam in the past with ESO. Just do a search on the forum here for "Steam Login" or something similar.

    Yeah, I remember :p
I found a way to use Steam's proton while still using the official servers, so should be okay!
