Add-ons can only retrieve information that ZOS makes available through their APIs. ZOS have exclusive control over the APIs and have changed them in the past in response to the way some add-ons made use of them. If you play on PC, you can get the same add-ons and play on equal grounds with people who use them. I wouldn't mind if ZOS removed certain APIs that warn of incoming damage/mechanics, but don't think they qualify as cheating or even exploiting, since by making the relevant APIs available ZOS have implicitly stated they are intended.

I mean how is it considered cheating? it doesnt give you a unfair advantage over other players plus if it was considered cheating zos wouldve taken it down by now

Miats is not what it used to be. In fact, no one has talked about since it was nerfed.

Do addon's even work? I've had mine disabled since the last update. There was a shared library that kept giving me error message after error message.

They do, but I am not sure what add-on you use. I only use inventory insight and map pins because there is no way I'm wasting time reading that psijic map ... :D

All of mine work (none of which are alerts of any kind, pvp or otherwise). Some of them actually got updated, and the ones that didn't, I just went into each txt file and changed the API version to the current number. No more unhappy addons....

it was probably libstub, since it's not needed anymore for new addons, but needed for some til they update em.it'll tell you to disable type a command in chat and it'll stop warning you,but addons will stiill work fine. Also make sure everything is updated, best to use Minion, but can be done manually

No, it shouldn't. As others have said, the addon can only use functionality made available by ZOS. If it was considered cheating, it wouldn't be possible. ZOS ultimately have the final say on what is "cheating" and at this stage they obviously don't consider it to be.

Telling a player when something is about to happen in pvp is cheating. Telling me to dodge xyz is like me having walls in a FPS game knowing a guy is behind this corner preparing myself to shoot.

To be clear, have you used it and know what notifications it's actually giving, or is this just from the description of the addon? My understanding is that ZOS API changes have removed a lot of the notifications this gave. If it is notifying you, are they attacks with fairly obvious cues (audio for snipe, visible channels on opponent) or not?

Yes, it was changed, and there’s even a note on the esoui page:

“As far as i know from a very limited testing the notifications features don't work, due to changes on ZOS end.

I have no idea if that can be circumvented, nor i have any desire to investigate.

The rest of the features work fine.”

So I’m curious to know if the notifications now work again or if this is going off of (very) old information about how it used to work years ago.

Don't forget that some players are deaf, color-blind etc. so add-ons that reinforce/substitute existing prompts are a necessity for them. Anything the add-on picks up is available directly, but might get missed.

What exactly does this add-on do to help players with low skill level? All of its combat notifications stopped functioning years ago.

im new to pc and when getting started with add ons i was disappointed to see that they gave so MANY combat text alerts, when to block ,when to dodge, incoming rang attacks, incoming cc's , ect ,ect . It's sad that they let these in it degrades the game for PC and i for 1 would love to see them re-work what they let add ons do its not QOL to have COMBAT TEXT its disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As of last week there is STILL add ons that give COMBAT TEXT ( action duration reminder ,bandits user interface) just to name the few i found that gave them and tho i liked bandits ui and some of the settings it had to go I WILL NOT use an add on that gives COMBAT TEXT no matter how good other parts there is

Miat’s was the subject of the original question and of my question which you quoted. Other add-ons whose combat alerts are still functional are a very different subject — and ZOS does not seem to have a problem with them, otherwise they would have changed the API to disallow that as well.

If you don’t want to run combat alert add-ons, all the more power to you. But I think you’ll have a hard time convincing ZOS that they’re an exploit or convincing players that they should not enjoy the API access that ZOS deliberately left open for them.

i get you was talking about miat's , reason i listed others and if its in one its open to all so their all as disgusting as the next that use them but i guess let the low skill players feel good they will spend money in crown store to feel better about themselves and defend the use of add on's even if there unfair to REAL skill

Having addons for PVE is one thing. That is the laziness of the player for not reading guides or boss details. But when it comes to PVP that is an entirely different realm and conversation. The playing field should not be dictated upon those that wish to exploit mechanics.

I am absolutely against addons like this.
It takes away all skill people have in pve and if I cast something against a player behind their back from a distance, from stealth without them being able to see or hear me and they can dodge just because an addon warns them, YES, that IS cheating. Because normally, they would get hit by it for they would never see it coming without this.

    Stop justifying your carry addon.
I hope Zenimax reintroduces skill by completely outlawing this.

I think we're agreeing here rather than disagreeing: the kind of PvP notifications formerly provided by Miat's are a separate question from those provided in PvE and action duration reminders. And the question about Miat's PvP notifications was closed years ago, as ZOS changed the API to disallow that sort of thing, presumably because they agreed the notifications were not consistent with their view of PvP combat. I haven’t seen anyone here arguing we should have those kinds of PvP notifications back. I certainly am not. I am, however, having a hard time understanding what about the *current* functioning of Miat's is objectionable, since that notification functionality was gutted.

Objections about combat alerts that continue to exist and/or add-ons in general deserve a separate thread, as they are a separate issue.

Yes, but at the release the team said they didnt want any addons to be released that gave people an in combat advantage over other people, and now the game is flooded with them . People try to push the envelope.
