Is Scathing Mage working properly?

In short bursts using direct damage skills like Force Pulse and jabs it procs near 100% of the time but once over the duration of a parse/fight it's super unpredictable. I've had 20mil parses where it averaged like 58%. Anyone else having similar issues?

    The tooltip says 20%, @Marteene, so try not to overthink it.

    Sometimes, you’ll get a string of good luck on direct damage. Sometimes you won’t.

    It’s like the crafting refining forum complaint threads we see all the time ... where a player gets five gold tempers after refining 10k of raw mats. ;) Sometimes those players have a string of bad luck and are quite vocal about it.

    I tested it on PTS with sweeps and found it was up just over half the time. Another Templar confirmed it’s about 60% too.

    It does feel off, the uptime should be a lot higher if you’re hitting the dummy 5x a second (sweeps plus LA). 60% uptime should be an outlier on the low end, not the average. IDK if they changed sweeps maybe, there was mention in the PTS notes about how the first tick of a dot doesn’t count as direct damage anymore but nothing about channels.

    Caveat: I haven't done PvE on my magPlar in a while.

    But in a rotation you aren't dealing 5x Direct Damage per second. You are in the spammable phase but then you have to re-cast DoTs, etc. and that is where the buff is likely falling off.

    I just SMH at why these non-damaging (e.g. I'm not NOT talking about damage sets like Calurion, Red Mountain, etc.) sets even have a cooldown at all. Keep the 20% chance but allow it to self-refresh when the buff is up in order to increase the uptime.

    You would still need to build for it (e.g. use Jabs or Force Pulse) but you wouldn't have "enforced downtime" due to the cooldown and proc duration being the same.

    I agree with you but I was just spamming sweeps to test it. Maybe I misunderstand how sweeps work but I thought every hit would be a chance to proc it.

    If it’s a 20% chance to proc on any hit, hitting 5 times and only having 60% uptime is astronomically low. I don’t have the binomial table memorized or anything, but odds are you should have better than a 90% uptime unless there’s a hidden cooldown or I’m misunderstanding how sweeps works. The chance of using sweeps twice and getting no proc should be .8^10.

    I'm willing to bet it's only counting the last hit. I wondered this about flurry too. Worth testing if you can cast and block cancel, try to get it on any early hit.
