Is there a reason there is a fee for mailing items to players?
Now I am not complaining. Not at all.
I am just genuinely curious as to whether it is a simple gold sink, or if it goes deeper behind the scenes?

A mechanic in online games that attempts to maintain economic stability by 'destroying' gold; otherwise, gold would just pile up indefinitely. Anything you buy that takes gold out of the economy is a gold sink (teleportation, non-tradeable items, mail services, trader listing fees, etc.).3 -
