A lot of (not all, but a lot) the deadric princes/mobs, motifs, races come from real world cultural myths, legends as well certain pop culture inspirations and re-imaginings of real world ancient cultures.

This is kind of long but it's all true!

I live in the woods in the middle of nowhere and I'm by myself most of the time when I'm at home and had a few consecutive nightmares about the wendigo a few months back. In my first dream I was in an argument with an aunt who is very judgmental and controlling despite being a huge B-hole herself. We were arguing about the behavior of one of my cousins when she said something completely unrelated when she mentioned that I, or perhaps my parents made a deal with the Spirit of the Wendigo. I have Native ancestry in my family and had never heard of it up until that point. My second dream, I actually saw it and I was so horrified the only thing I remember was the sight of it and it looked like that Alien-Human Hybrid from that Sigourney weaver trilogy which kind of gave me some relief when I tried to describe it to a friend and realized I had seen it before and didn't create such a terrifying monstrosity in my head. Even still, this was something that freaked me out so much to the point It woke me from a dead sleep and kept me awake for the next several days. I did some research on the Wendigo everywhere but this paragraph from the Wikipedia Concept/Metaphor section is the only part that spoke to me specifically the bold text.

"As a concept, wendigo can apply to situations other than some Native American-European relations. It can serve as a metaphor explaining any pattern of domination by which groups subjugate and dominate or violently destroy and displace. Joe Lockhard, English professor at Arizona State University, argues that wendigos are agents of "social cannibalism" who know "no provincial or national borders; all human cultures have been visited by shape shifting wendigos. Their visitations speak to the inseparability of human experience ... National identity is irrelevant to this borderless horror".[31] Lockhard's ideas explain that wendigos are an expression of a dark aspect of human nature: the drive toward greed, consumption, and disregard for other life in the pursuit of self-aggrandizement."

I live on land that sat empty for nearly a decade and had been retaken by nature. I suspect the reason the property remained empty for so long is bc there is an old abandoned house where I believe something bad may have happened to the family that lived there as the house is riddled with bullet holes and they're stuff was left inside of it. I think maybe the disturbance of taking back what nature had reclaimed may have stirred up some dark past or may be trying to warn me about the man I initially moved here with who embodies that bolded quote... or maybe they just want me off their land. Idk I was never a superstitious person until moving here so IDK exactly how it works.

But like I said, I did some research and found these Native sigils I hung around my bedroom that are supposed to Ward Off Evil Spirits and haven't dreamed about it since. I know it's all psychosomatic, I don't even believe in any of that stuff and consider myself agnostic, but it worked... 🤷

Hircine is not a wendigo, but rather took his inspiration from the Celtic god Cernnunos, the Horned God, Herne the hunter, etc.

Yeah Hircine doesn't really seem to have wendigo themes. Probably cause bosmer don't need any help with cannibalism. :p

thanks for sharing on "Cernnunos", i can see leaning more of celtic. if you think Wendigo doesnt fit, to me it might be hybrid of most horned deities in many cultures.
think of origins originated from birthplace of human race, as they branch out, horned god became more varied and passed down in many generations settled where they lived., you be surprised when they built mayan pyramids similar to egyptian pyramids.

Herne the Hunter as well as Cernnunos.

I though Wendigo was created if someone resorted to cannibalism, whether voluntarily, or when in a inescapable situation, like snowed in in the winter. In the original Morrowind/Tribunal/Bloodmoon, you find out the draugrs were cursed because they became cannibals; closer to wendigo than Hircine, imo.
