ESO bails on GeForce Now

Little upset here, I bought the game a second time on steam just to be able to play ESO on my PC or on my Shield in the living room. Also love doing things like crafting on my phone while I watch TV. I bought a Shield just for this option. Pls don't do this :/

Afaik we have not been able to do anything in ESO on our phone.

Geforce Now is Nvidia's cloud gaming service. It's not just a phone thing. Think stadia, but not garbage.

It is not just Bethesda. Activision was the first to leave GeForce Now. Possibly more leaving soon.

So far it's just those two, the main reason being they are greedy as hell and wanted a bigger piece of the pie. CDPR is certainly onboard with Nvidia, and that's huge.

It’s not unreasonable for content creators (movie makers, music makers, game developers) to want the lions share of any distributed material rather than handing that over to the distributor/platform. You can see exactly the same conflict over rights for Spotify, Apple Music etc and it’s clearly a driving force behind both Netflix and Amazon’s desire to produce their own programming rather than pay others to do that for them.

If I were running a game development studio I would be looking to safeguard my IP and revenue too, while if I ran one of many game streaming services I’d be wanting to drive down payments to content creators as that might damage my subscriber base. Clearly GeForce and some studios disagree on the value of the game content.

I can see why ESO would not want their game to be on that platform as they committed to Stadia. It sounds like Nvidia and Zos could not come up with an agreement.

I disagree with that comment. Geforce now is a service that Nvidia runs with their servers. All it does is takes games you ALREADY OWN and users their servers to allow customers of Bethesda to play their game on many devices which in itself makes more money for them.

sorry, but it is greed. There is nothing to protect. The games are already owned and with so many games having service content added on top, it already benefits them.

Thing of how stupid this is.

hey, we have a service that will allow your customers to play on more devices which will keep them engaged and woudl most likely produce more money for you.

no thanks, we dont want that. We want to restrict our customers so they cant log on wherever they are and we wish to lose that potential income that comes from that.

they are being dumb and greedy.

    I find this bit weird.

Bethesda is already on league with steam who takes huge cut on their products but won't go with nvidia service that already requires you to own product to use it.

They want their own similiar service but who ond earth would want to use it, zos and bethesda servers are infamous for lag and bugs.

I think it makes good sense. There were a number of things you couldn't do in game like ressing players because the overlay for gforce now occupied two buttons that keep you from using the game correctly. Esp was not fully functional with a gampad on GeForce now AND Nvidia never made a controller with enough buttons to compensate for the lack of buttons. Given that the game was not fully functional, I would pull it too if I were zos/Bethesda. If you played it on your phone with a controller you should know this to be true.
After careful consideration (and oh! so much deliberation) we have concluded that you circumstance sounds too much like a l2p issue for it to be just a mere coincidence.

Is this like when ESPN disappears from my cable service? And the cable company blames ESPN and ESPN blames the cable company? And they both air commercials telling us, the viewers, to call the other and complain? And then a few weeks later, ESPN is back? And the whole incident is never mentioned again? And the only thing that changed is that my cable bill went up?

I have been playing this game via GeForce now since October 2018. I purchased 3 Nvidia Shields for each member of my household this past winter. I already had an Nvidia Shield myself prior to buying 3 more. The game streams my games that I already own on Steam. It wasn't like I was getting to play for free, this game has gobbled up tons of my money. I no longer have a way to play so I will have to cancel my subscription. Sucks that I pre-ordered the new chapter and won't be able to play. I never had issues with my gamepad. All of my buttons worked, I could rez people...never felt like I was lacking in controller options. It was perfect! Now it's been ruined! I have paid for a service I can no longer use (eso plus) and purchased every chapter, dlc, and dungeon. I'm sure someone will say, "go buy a computer!" Unfortunately, I don't have the money to go out and purchashe a gaming PC. Beyond irritated with this company...you are going to loose soooo many customers. Just read the GeForce Now forums. What a selfish move. Maybe you're not aware, but you are doing nothing more than attacking paying customers. I hope this issue is resolved asap. I have many friends on here, some that are sick and dying...let them know that we (Nvidia Shield users) didn't abandoned them, we were screwed over and can't play.

there is no greed with nvidia. they charge a fee which is for the use of their servers. All they do is give you access to games you already own on other devices.

most likely what is happening is these companies are pulling out all close together because they have colluded and trying to leverage Nvidia to give them a cut of the profits that Nvidia does all the work for.

Bethesda has always been greedy. You have to give them money just to hold virtual inventory... We just put up with it to spend time with friends we have met along the way....friends who live across the world, old people who can't get out, those dying with cancer who are too sick to get outdoors... It's really nice to be able to make a difference in other's lives. We are now making a difference in their lives, but not in a way that improves their day and helps them get by.

All the buttons did not work. If the had worked iwouldnt have returned mine to Amazon and accused Nvidia of falsely advertising their streaming service allows full function of games in their service. I ended up having to build a system from scratch and struggled to afford it because Nvidia wouldn't work fully with eso. If it had worked I would have kept my shield tv. People need to stop lying about it's functionality. Their shield overlay occupied two of the long press buttons and that meant you couldn't use those functions that were necessary for playing the game.

@FierceSam Not even remotely similar, and it's sad to see so many people agreeing with you. Spotify doesn't require you to buy music first in order to stream it. You pay Spotify with the expectation of having instant access to a huge library of music at no extra cost. Nvidia Now is essentially just renting one of Nvidia's PCs, installing games you own through libraries like Steam on that PC, and streaming to a device of your choosing. You have to have paid ZOS/Bethesda for a copy of ESO in order to stream it.

Essentially, this is ZOS/Bethesda trying to tell consumers: "No, you may have purchased that game, but we have the right to determine which PCs you can and can't install it from."

Legally, especially in the EU, it's highly likely that Bethesda and Activision would be found to be in the wrong here if it went to court. But due to the way courts work, especially in the US, Nvidia knows they probably don't have the money to keep a court case going long enough to secure the win against Bethesda and Activision. And even if they did it would massively sour relations with these publishers going forwards. So it's probably financially smarter to go along with it and try to work out a deal where these publishers get to make even more money out of the games you've already purchased from them, likely necessitating higher subscription costs to Nvidia's service.

Tl;dr: Bethesda are screwing you over.

It's possible, but I think it's far more likely they want a streaming war similar to Netflix/Amazon/HBO, where Bethesda get to sell streaming rights to their games to the highest bidder on an annual basis. Similar to the way shows like Friends and Scrubs bounce around between streaming services for insanely high prices right now. It's easy money, no effort on Bethesda's part, and we'd be looking at a future where companies like Google, Nvidia, and Amazon bid for game streaming rights from Bethesda and Activision etc.

Nvidia's current offering is just too damn consumer friendly for Bethesda and Activision to be on board with.

My problem is the amount of money people have payed to play ESO on this format. I have bought 2 copies of the game. One for my wife and one for me. We bought a Shield also to play in the living room. We already owned a PC copy of the game because that's where we started. They are just dropping a whole line of customers like myself and expect us to buy Stadia and new copies of the game to be able to stream again when we choose too. Nope. This is a spit in the face.

If they want to move to a new streaming service, they should refund us for the game we can't use anymore. Or give us free copies on Stadia.
