You have been playing Fallout 76, haven't you?
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

Lol. No I hate that game. Never played it either. Had the idea waaay before there was ever a fallout.

Seems like going to a guild house would allow more functionality

If not limited to friends list: Your guild hall will have a set of storage boxes. The amount of people who own them will drastically decrease because they will just use community-provided hubs of them instead.
If limited to friends list: ...Probably similar but at a lesser scale.
If limited to boxes you also own: Not sure how it would work in relation to housng permissions or the way the boxes are coded in the first place. They would end up functioning more like a different type of bank and I believe the original reason for adding them was to avoid some kind of serverload associated with more bank space? Not sure how big the impact here would be. But overall probably unnecessary.

How would your friend's box know which of your own boxes you're trying to access? I have 8 named boxes in one house, but only one small box for "show" in my open house that friends can access.

There is a unique identifier for each chest that is not overwritten by a player giving the chest a name. This is a basic db design and should be the same for each chest for every player.

This is really no different than being able to access other players' bankers.

You have the banker for this. Put your valuable trash in your chests at home and the items you swap in the bank.

I have also named boxes like weapons+ jewlery, monster, medium, light then an small for heavy, one for various items like the daeric thrones.
I use it for more long term storage.
But other will have other names, they might not even have all the boxes

Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

I’m not over at friends’ houses enough for this to be an issue at all.

On the very, very rare occasions I might suddenly and unexpectedly need something from my storage chest, I’ll just port home then back to the other player’s house. Far less hassle than having something that allowed other players to footle around in my chests (even if it was for their things).

I could see it might be a convenience if there was ever such a thing as guild housing, but even then, there’s the banker for that.

If any effort is being spent in this area, I’d prefer it to go to better inventory systems, increasing storage allowances and letting me access the guild store (for selling at least) from my banker. I mean I spent enough gold on him, he ought to actually earn his keep.

This would be useful for me because my guild leader has turned one of their houses into a 'guild hall' with all the set crafting stations which I often use when doing master writs. I keep trait and rare style materials in one of my home chests (because I don't need them often) and it's a bit of a pain to go to the guild hall, realise I don't have the material I need, go to my house and then back to the hall.

But I'm not sure how practical it would be, if it's possible at all, on a wider scale. I'm not even sure if my guild hall has the chests and considering they use up a large number of the very limited collectable furnishing slots putting them in might require removing something else.

Also I can already guarantee this will lead to confusion over whose chests you're accessing. If it was implemented it's only a matter of time until we get a player outraged that someone got into their house and took stuff from their chests (unwilling to believe the person was accessing their own chests), and someone else outraged that they used the nirncrux their friend/guild leader left in a chest free for taking and now because of a stupid bug all the nirncrux they were saving in their chest is gone! I'm not sure that's a reason not to do it, but it's an issue that might need to be considered.
