DLC event tickets gated behind paywalls.

Last year during the many many DLC events that were zos were giving out small eso+ free trials (not whole event) so people will be able to participate and were advertising that you can get all indriks even without the paywall.

This is already the second dlc event in a row with no eso+ trial. I feel like zos is going back on their words.

PS: before "just buy the dlc" comments (or murkmire was free, or just pay eso+, etc etc) i have the dlc, and i think it should be available to newer players and f2p ones alike (tbh i would be fine with it being gated if they would retake their previous statement and say it is more loyalty oriented this year)

It being scheduled during a new DLC poses a problem for them I bet.

Well, the whole point of events before they became glorified rng pony lotteries was to encourage players who had not purchased specific zones/DLC to go out and buy them.

Murkmire is on sale (albeit at the same time the new DLC is released). So players who want to go there can get it cheaply. It’s also a weird case as everyone who was around in November 2018 will have got it free.

ESO is not a ftp game. You might only pay 5 bucks for the basegame (and that’s 5 bucks well spent in my view), but you’ve still spent money. It’s not free. It doesn’t pretend to be free. And I’m 100% fine with that. And if we are paying for the game, then we’re all behind a ‘paywall’.

I’m not sure ZOS did ever pretend that everyone would be able to get all the Indriks without requiring DLC content. They certainly aren’t now. I mean they’re barely pretending that you can get both of the rubbish mementos without spending real money, so I think the free Indrik thing has long gone.

I still think it's questionable to do the whole event during the time scheduled for PC's Update 25. ;) Console get their update after, but PC is hit directly.

I don't recall them saying that, even if they did that was last years promise, unless they promised the same thing again this year during their advertising campaigns you can't expect them to cater to people still on the fence at this point.

They will likely have a different scheme to entice players this year, its common for companies to use different approaches each year.

If a player is serious enough about the game to want the cosmetic extra's like the mounts, which don't affect game play then I don't think its too much for them to subscribe, even if its just for a month they don't even have to buy the individual DLC.

Other than that you think maybe just maybe they are holding off the free ESO plus trials till after the whole re-download the game update, so they don't annoy brand new players by causing them to download the whole game, after seeing an ESO plus free trial marketed only to have to re download the whole thing again shortly afterward?

That or they want to wait for the performance improvements they are hoping for are implemented before showing off the game to potential new players.

We don't know how many tickets the last event will give and if we get another chance to earn all feathers and berries during the anniversary. It's a bit too early to say they went back on their word now, although I would not be surprised if they did.

Most of these events are a grind fest already and the RNG is terrible most of the time too. I am not sure I would have completed that Legion Zero style and the emotes if I actually cared about the ghost indrik, there were just not enough tickets for that.

This isn't the first time ZOS have run a special event in a DLC map without offering a free way to access it and I doubt it will be the last. Like everything they do there has to be a benefit for the company as well as for players and it's pretty clear these events are intended to get people to buy the DLC. If you don't want to buy the DLC the options are to skip this event or buy a month of ESO+ to gain access.

If you can't afford to buy ESO+ or the DLC and you want tickets that really sucks, I know from experience how annoying it is (before anyone says anything I have a job, I had a job at the time, but life is more complicated than just earning money and buying games) but ESO is not and never has been a free to play game. ZOS have never claimed you could play it for free so there is absolutely no requirement for them to offer a free way to access DLC.

(I know there's a bad habit on this forum of calling anyone who doesn't subscribe a free player but that's just inaccurate wording, not a reflection of reality. There is no way to play ESO at all without paying for it, or someone else paying and giving it to you.)

Over a year ago, yes, with many new players having joined the game since then, as the OP already pointed out.
    - I say, as someone who has Murkmire from that daily login reward.

No DLC items are so crucial to gameplay that you cannot be successful. Saying there is no way to play ESO without paying for it is sensationalistic and disingenuous. Pay whatever initial fee and you’ve bought a service in this case access to base game and to what is needed to complete the content provided in base game.

When you buy a car do you assume the electronics package, leather seats, and everything else comes with the base cost? If you want more, you pay for it in some way.

The fact is, people want shiny things and if they don't get them for free they stomp their feet and scream at the sky.

NOTHING is free. If its not money spent, its time. If its not time, its effort. If you are unwilling to give up one of these things in exchange for another thats your choice. Nothing wrong with that choice. But don't act like you are owed more than you deserve.

For me, $15 US a month for all the DLC and craft bag isn't really that bad. One indulgence that takes my mind off work and gives me a chance to relax. During the summer I usually let ESO+ lapse because I actually go outside.

I think you may have misunderstood my post. Either that or I've misunderstood yours. I'm not the one asking for free access to Murkmire, I'm explaining to the OP why it isn't free and why ZOS is under no obligation to make it free. So you appear to be agreeing with me, but wording it as if you're trying to prove me wong which is pretty confusing.

(Also your first paragraph is contradictory. If you have to pay for something then it's not free, whether you call it a purchase price or an 'initial fee' or whatever, it's a cost. I didn't say you had to buy DLC to be able to complete the base game, I said you have to pay for the base game to be able to play it and it is therefore not a free to play game, because you can't play it without first paying for it.)
