Timber Mammoths and Huge Mammoth's Tooth for Beast Collector?

Can anybody confirm that the Huge Mammoth's Tooth trophy (for the Character > Trophies > Tamriel Beast Collector achievement) can drop from the Timber Mammoths found in Malabal Tor?

I saw another post from October 2019 that someone obtained the trophy somewhere in Malabal Tor, but they didn't specify where or from what mob type. All the mammoths I can find in the zone are the Timber Mammoth variant, but I haven't probably exhaustively examined every mammoth in the zone.

The reason I ask - I've been farming the Timber Mammoths in the Dra'bul area in Malabal Tor. About every 1 in 3-4 drops a Foul Hide. I have over 400 Foul Hides and no Huge Mammoth Tooth, meaning I've killed between 1200 and 1600 mammoths without getting the trophy. I'm starting to despair. That's a drop rate (for me, at least) of < 0.08% assuming the most generous Foul Hide drop rate, and that I get the tooth on the very next kill. I'm not sure how they get their data or what the sample size is, but UESP records a drop rate of 0.4-0.8% percent, which is 5-10 times better. So I can't tell if such an outlier, as my experience would seem to be, is to be expected or not.

I haven't had this much trouble on any of the other trophies (at least since the items actually dropped - iirc, at one point, some of them didn't, which is part of why I've been putting these achievements off for years). Is the drop rate on this particular item really that low? Am I getting spectacularly unlucky? Or do the Timber Mammoths not drop the thingy in question?

Although, in spite of all my efforts, the mammoth species does not seem to be endangered. So there's that!

Any info, or alternate farming tips, would be greatly appreciated! Dye hunters, unite?

I got mine off the mammoths in Eastmarch, so I can’t really comment on Malabal Tor, except to say that variants *should* drop the trophy as well. It took me fewer kills than it seems to be taking you, but I had other trophies that took at least as long as the numbers you posted, if not more (trolls, ironically, among them). Fortunately I had only a few trophies take that long. I wouldn’t put much stock in UESP’s numbers. You would need a huge sample size to see meaningful data.

By the end I’d say it took me usually no more than two full armor set’s worth of farming at CP 1100-ish until most trophies dropped. I have an add-on that autorepairs, so I’d keep an eye on how many times it repaired my gear as I farmed a loop. A given trophy usually dropped by the time I was into the third cycle. (More during a double xp event, of course.) For me the area where I farmed depended on where I could set up a reliable loop so that I didn’t spend too much time getting from mob to mob but also didn’t have to wait for mobs to respawn. I found a much more reliable area in Eastmarch to do that (in the south, by the mammoth world boss) than in MT.

Hang in there, and good luck!

Thank you for the reply <3 I can answer the question definitely now for myself. Squeaky wheels, I guess?

So, yes, the tooth does drop from Timber Mammoths. There are six timber mammoths in a circuit which respawn quite quickly in the Dra'bul area. Two near the watchtower at one entrance, two down the cliff below, and two at the largest orc structure up the right incline of the forked road. Each group will probably have respawned by the time you get back to it.

If I learned anything from farming these god forsaken trophies, it's that next time you will kill a mammoth somewhere, it will drop again.
