nirnhoned staff no charge needed?

my sister was lucky enough to get a nirnhoned lightning staff which she says does not need to be charged like other staffs. She wants me to learn the trait with her staff and then make one for her and her hubby. before I go destroying her staff in research Id like to know for certain that the one I make will not need a charge using a soul gem the same way hers never needs to be charged. anyone have experience making these?

All weapon enchants require charges to fuel the enchantment and soul gems to recharge them. She is technically correct in one way in that the nirnhoned part of the staff does not require charging as it is a trait. No traits require charging, only the enchant component. In the same way you don't have to "charge" sharpened, infused or training either, but you do need to charge your weapon for enchants like flaming or poison.

All enchantments lose their charge. Doesn't matter what the trait is and Nirnhoned improves your weapon's damage by 11-12-13-14-15% depending on the grade. Nirnhoned armor gives you spell and physical resistances.

The enchant has to be charged, not the trait....So, if no enchant is applied which would increase your damage greatly, no soul gem needed.

On a Nirn traited staff, I would slap a gold enchant in that weapon asap !! You’re wasting the Nirn and your gold if you do not. Soul gems are plenty in this game. Good luck 😊

She may be confused. What requires charging are the enchants, nirnhoned only increases the base damage of the staff itself and has nothing to do with the enchantment. If it's a lightning staff with a shock damage enchantment, the shock damage enchant will still require charging.

If it were me, and the staff was from a good set, I wouldn't destroy it to research or to decon. You can find nirnhoned staffs on the traders for research purposes.
