Cross save?

I know that cross play isn’t really in the works or really possible at this moment, but I was wonder if cross save could potentially be a thing? I have a lot of friends that would like to play the game on different consoles it would be cool if I could help them out or play with my characters from pc and vice verse if they ever feel they’d like to switch over from consoles when they were ready without feeling like they’d lost progression. Just a suggestion!

Cross-saves are just as impossible (practically speaking) as cross-platform play.

They did offer a one-time account transfer from PC back when the game was first released for console. They don’t offer that anymore in part because there are database conflicts: if you get two accounts or even just two characters with the same name between platforms, one would have to take priority and the other lose out. There’s no real way to resolve that conflict fairly. The same barrier (at least with character names) exists between megaservers on the same platform, part of the reason why there will not be cross-server saves either.

Lots of players have switched platforms and had to start from scratch, at least in terms of characters and items. The upside is that they can bring their experience with them, which makes it easier to build up a new account. (And if they’re moving to PC, they have the added benefit of add-ons as well as friends like you to help out.)

Destiny pulls it off pretty well. I figured they could do it too! Wish they could figure out a way around shared names.

I think they probably just don’t see the upside in implementing it, even if they could work around name conflicts somehow, compared to what they stand to lose.

It benefits them if we have to pay for a new account to switch platforms. (Like having to buy crown store items on each server instead of making them truly account wide.) If they implemented cross-platform saves, they’d lose not only the initial resource investment but also the potential money spent on new accounts and various crown store items (DLC, houses, mounts, pets, what have you) that people miss having and want for their new platform. The crown store pricing models already suggest they like to cater to fewer big spenders rather than many more moderate spenders, and I think this follows the same pattern. They would rather keep the status quo and get the money from people willing to pay to switch over, not to mention put in the time investment required to catch up, rather than spend their own time and money to make it free and let players take their entitlements and progress with them, even if that might encourage customer loyalty.

Cross play can happen; Sony and Microsoft have given the green light. It would be a ZoS decision to make it happen.

Genuine question: Given the current performance of the megaservers, would you want to risk even greater fluctuations of players across them?

Poor PC-EU is already shafted routinely even without cross-play due to extremely high concurrency. I can’t imagine what would happen if they allowed cross-play with NA and the entire console populations as well. They’d certainly have to (re)institute a concurrency cap (which I believe may actually be in place regularly, even on NA, from what I’ve seen). And of course you still have that name issue that has no good solution.

Wouldn’t making the account name the only one that actually matters fix that issue? Wow merged servers and allowed people to keep their names via name-server when trying to contact them. Sorry just a thought.
