What's the most ridiculous thing you do...

...when making a character?

There are "superstitions" and ridiculous habits surrounding most hobbies/sports. You hear about baseball players who won't change their socks or gamblers who only will wear one particular hat when playing, for example.

I realized this morning that I do something equally ridiculous when making a new character and am wondering if anyone else does.

Here's mine: I am *convinced* there's a hidden "Luck" stat. This has never been proven, nor has anyone ever admitted to it, and I logically believe that it is NOT a thing. But I have characters who are (at least to me  ) far more luckier than others. SO! Whenever I roll a new character, I take him or her through whatever tutorial is offered and *if* they do not find a blue book/pattern/recipe before exiting the tutorial, I re-roll them completely. I also have been known to hold onto a character I otherwise HATE simply because they seemingly are "luckier" than others.

Let's hear the things *you* do.
PC/NA - Perpetually casual. Furniture and fish collector. Lover of exploration and opener of urns.
Maxed CPs, still no clue how to endgame, too much time opening urns, prolly.
Eve Morrison - Templar DPS - Furniture Crafter/Maker of Arms - Co-op w/hubby/achievements/crafting
Jilly Narraway - MagDK DPS - Delves/Dungeons/Dolmans - She murders ALL THE THINGS!
Fynn the Lucky - Warden Tank -- Seer of things/Explorer of places - RP/Solo/Storyline/Completionist
Siluna Southpaw - StamDK DPS slippery-fingered type/Murder hobo - RP/Solo/Storyline

that is quite an odd tenancy you have i'm not going to lie

myself, when i make an argonian character they always have "Arcane" in their name (see sig), as part of an ongoing 'lore' of sorts i have in mind

besides that, if i have the option to i will implement my favourite colour, blue into my character somehow, such as blue eyes for example
    skingrad when zoscharacters:
    • EP - M - Strikes-with-Arcane - Argonian Stamina Sorc - lvl 50 - The Flawless Conqueror/Spirit Slayer
    • EP - F - Melina Elinia - Dunmer Magicka Dragonknight - lvl 50
    • EP - F - Sinnia Lavellan - Altmer Warden Healer - lvl 50
    • EP - M - Follows-the-Arcane - Argonian Healer Sorcerer- lvl 50
    • EP - F - Ashes-of-Arcane - Argonian Magicka Necromancer - lvl 50
    • EP - M - Bolgrog the Sinh - Orc Stamina Dragonknight - lvl 50
    • EP - F - Moonlight Maiden - Altmer Magicka Templar - lvl 50
    • EP - F - Maxine Cauline - Breton Magicka Nightblade - lvl 50

I have wondered the same. My crafter gets at least two gold tempers almost every 100 raw mats and I have a sample space of over 10k raw mats at least while the official rate is 1 per 200.

I'm a big believer in compounded RNG and global RNG.

Compounded to me means instead of opening say an event box every time I get one, or a dragon document pack, I wait until I have at least 5, but most of the time 10, before opening them. I always seem to get more desired items when doing it this way.

As for Global, I have noticed when I refine materials really early in the morning or late at night, I get roughly 200:1 on gold tempers. Now when I do it around 12-1PM my time, when I see people zipping around to do their daily writs and refine and craft, I have seen as much as 200:4 for tempers. Leaving me to believe that like fishing, the more people doing the action of refining, the better peoples odd are. Who knows though.

None of this is proven. This is just my superstition/train of thought, and 9/10 times, it seems to work the way I think it does.

Not when creating a character, but when I want to refine large stacks of mats, I'll refine 10 stacks and see what I get. If I deem it not good enough, I'll wait to refine the rest.

...I'm a statistician btw; I KNOW BETTER than this. Yet I can't help it...

I can totally relate. For the first few months I had the game I did nothing but Recreate and Delete my now Main character countless times and it is a process I undergo every time I create a new character until I find an incarnation that just... feels right. Can't explain what it is...

There are still some characters I've just gotten tired of trying to perfect in my twisted little mind I'm still unsatisfied with. I have a few CP Alts that are still basically noobs bc I just can't get into them for some reason and too indecisive when it comes to Appearance/ Race change tokens. I have them stockpiled and previewed changes to existed characters countless times I just can't commit to. I just cancel the edits and the character sits as is unused. lol

I haven't noticed if any of my characters are "lucky" or not, all find pretty much the same stuff in containers, reward boxes (including ones from writs) etc. But a good method is to simply multiply the numbers of characters doing an activity for maximizing chances of getting good rewards, and minimizing the time for each iteration. For example:
    - when farming vMA do it once on multiple characters over a week so you also get the leaderboard reward for that run
    - when farming legendary upgrades do writs on multiple characters, preferably at max tier because for low tier the chances are much lower.
There are drop chances that take into account some other variables, for example getting master writs, which has been discussed at length on the forum so I won't repeat here.

It seems reasonable to me but two things I know some people find weird:

My characters could be either male or female, purely depending on what I think suits them (see below). Until I read about it on forums it never occurred to me to always make my characters female so they're more like me, or make them male so it's less likely I'll get harassed in game or whatever else, I just imagine a person and make them.

Also I start designing characters by thinking about things which are purely cosmetic (like how old they are and what colours they'd wear) or not in the game at all (like their backstory) and use that to decide the important stuff like what armour weight/s they'll wear and what weapons they'll use. I often don't decide if they'll focus on stamina or magicka until after I've started levelling them and had a chance to see which skills and weapons 'suit them'.

Sometimes this leads to pretty illogical choices, like my argonian nightblade who uses a sword and shield and destruction staff. I know it's a horrible combination which doesn't make any sense, but it's the only thing which feels right for the character. Although I do like the idea of a sneaky tank - you won't see them coming until they're right in front of you and then it's too late because you can't get rid of them...and also you're on fire, because destruction staff.

Oh, also on the subject of new characters and luck I'm firmly of the opinion that the game knows which weapons I want them to use and makes sure I don't get them during the tutorial. As I mentioned my weapon choices can be pretty illogical so it's not as simple as 'my dragon knights never get a shield'. Whatever weapon I want seems to be rarer than gold dust in the tutorial, while I'll be picking up so many irrelevant ones I have to throw them away.

I know it's a very minor problem, and at least 1 of each weapon type is useful since they implemented that silly system of hiding skill lines until you use them, but it still bothers me to see them racking up levels in a skill I know they'll never use again once they get out the tutorial.

Find the most broken mechanics and plan it all out for days before executing my plan. Then defend the most broken things on the forums whenever someone brings it up and/or downplays how broken it is.

Next, I enter the PTS and test things to find something more broken, then keep quiet about it and vaguely allude to it by saying "X will be good" or "just wait."

Finally, I make the character and decide to use a different build.

All my khajiit characters have ridiculous names. Wiggletocks, Toebeans of Doom. And to max out the weird, I’ve created three modeled after each of my cats. Sir Grumpers the Swole (he’s oddly muscular), Dame Mammas the Flubby (chonky), and Roppongi the Dainty (her name was too long for a title :/ )
If I see cheese, I’m looting it.
I can’t open loot boxes one at a time, I have to wait to collect all of the boxes I plan to collect that day on that character and then open them all up.
When I splurge on crown crates, I flip the blue/purple/gold cards last.

If some characters are inherently luckier than others I definitely hit the booby prize. I had a fairly large amount of fish in my inventory and finally decided to clear it out. 344 filleted fish later, not one single perfect roe. That's the kind of RNG that I have.

When refining materials I always switch between multiple resources. So for example, I start to refine silk a couple times, switch to hide, refine that a couple times, switch to silk etc. I guess its probably superstition but it seems like I often get gold mats just after switching to another resource.

I do something similar, most items get passed to my crafter to either sell in a guild store or deconstruct and I'm trying to break myself out of the habit of logging into him when I'm done for the night just to deconstruct whatever the other characters put into the bank.

I really don't need to do that because I log into him first to do crafting dailies, so I can do it then, but somehow I feel uncomfortable leaving a bunch of junk in the bank when I log off.

Then they reach CP levels and bam, suddenly they know how to dress themselves and look like the Real Deal. or something idk.
